blender is an awsome open source 3d app. and a perfect place to start with 3d. Its small and quick. I learned all the basics of 3d with blender, it has a great support community and its possible to do quality stuff with it. Problem is you have to get used to a lot of short cuts and it isn't very intuitive to use all. Its great to get into 3d and learn the concepts but there's a learning curve.
