I'm looking to learn more about 3-D rendering and animation. As of now, i know next to nothing about it, and want a way to learn. The best way for me to learn is hands on, but without having any knowledge or expertise, i find it hard to justify spending all so much money on professional programs.
So i researched a bit and found Blender. Its a free, open source program that looks to have some potential.
http://www.blender.org/Has anyone ever used it? Is it any good? Will the skills and terms translate from this to other more widely used programs if i decide i love it?
Any and all info is much appreciated. THANKS!

blender is an awsome open source 3d app. and a perfect place to start with 3d. Its small and quick. I learned all the basics of 3d with blender, it has a great support community and its possible to do quality stuff with it. Problem is you have to get used to a lot of short cuts and it isn't very intuitive to use all. Its great to get into 3d and learn the concepts but there's a learning curve.

People love Blender. If you want to try closed source program one day, look into Cinema 4D.

i've used it loads in order to create flash apps using papervision & away3d.

"a perfect place to start with 3d"
"you have to get used to a lot of short cuts and it isn't very intuitive"
Conflicting statements surely?
You are better off with Cinema4D, its great for beginners

Blender is a complete professional grade 3D program in the same league as Maya, Max and C4D. If you do not believe this, check out links below. It is not a limited amatuer program like Swift3D (which you should avoid).
As such it is complex and takes a long time to learn. In the graphics world, 3D is by far the most complex software you can use.
People always say that C4D is easy, but I cannot believe any 3D program that is full featured (and C4D is supposed to be) is 'easy'. I think maybe the interface is just a little more natural to Mac/Adobe users.
People are always debating which 3D package is 'best'. I think the question is irrelevant. If you use Maya or Max or C4D or Blender you will be able to create the same kinds of things, and it will take a long time to master. The huge advantage of Blender is that it is free.
The most important thing about 3D is, If you want to get any good, you need to invest time. Not days or weeks. Months.

This is the difference good interface design makes, you could make something like MS Word as hard to use as Maya if you gave it a poor interface. Just because most 3D programs are hard to use due to the poor interfaces doesn't mean that something has to be hard to use to be powerful.Although I agree it definitely is a trend that easy to use = shit in the 3D world, however C4D bucks that trend.

Thanks! Downloaded and started working through some tutorials. It is quite complex...
