We rely on the file server for most of the tasks. All the work is being done directly on the server, not locally. The server is also being backed-up every night (Synology DS410) and it works just fine.
When one of two Macs is online, everything flows as intended, including an mp3 folder for iTunes.
As soon as the second iMac comes online, it might (or might not) get tricky. As I said, I cannot pin down the problem – sometimes both Macs just hang (Finder and the application, which is reading/writing the server) and we are forced to wait. It happens mostly when we work within the same shared folder (which has many more subfolders in it).
I know, this is not a tech forum. But people can be nice here, you know... :)

    • Also: I've been forced many times to switch off my Mac by pressing The Button, cause it was just hanging and hanging...popovich

    • why working on the server?deathboy
    • to cut down overall data volume (think cross-linked files) => many users, one file structure, same paths, etcpopovich
