Switch to Mac = locked to Mac infrastructure?

I am not starting a flame thread here. NO.
But I am pretty much pissed, that it *looks* like I have to put my Win 7 Pro box in the basement and switch wholly to Mac servers and SL Server OS just because my workstation setup is based on iMacs.
True?
Or should I blame my hands for not being able to setup a stable file server under Win 7 Pro for simultaneous use by 2 (or more) Macs?
Thanks.

Macs are perfectly capable of dealing with windows based servers and can also perfectly access windows based file systems. Just have a little read about how to set it up. No worries, you'll get there. just don't jump to conclusions.

It looked to me that way, when we started. The thing is, we've been working in such an environment for months now: Win 7 Pro as file and web server, 2 x iMacs.
However, the hiccups were not seldom and I still cannot pin down the problem. I really don't know where to look. I've read many tips and tricks, tried this and that. Now with "Name Surname" usernames, used both on Macs & Windows, and different sharing permissions on Win box the hiccups seem to occur even more often. It is unbearable to sit and watch the Finder "wait" for something for a minute every half an hour.
I am just saying.Maybe a super-tip, anyone?
- had a issue like this and our mac store referred us to a local reseller vendor that solved all our problemstimeless

Maybe try to be a little more specific about what's not working and what you tried to solve it. This is no tech forum, but people might be able to help you.
I've been on a network for years where I'm the only mac dealing with 7 pc's. This worked flawlessly, both wired and wireless with a windows 2000 server. But this is years ago already, right now I'm fortunate enough to be on a full mac / xserve network, which is such a joy.

We rely on the file server for most of the tasks. All the work is being done directly on the server, not locally. The server is also being backed-up every night (Synology DS410) and it works just fine.
When one of two Macs is online, everything flows as intended, including an mp3 folder for iTunes.
As soon as the second iMac comes online, it might (or might not) get tricky. As I said, I cannot pin down the problem – sometimes both Macs just hang (Finder and the application, which is reading/writing the server) and we are forced to wait. It happens mostly when we work within the same shared folder (which has many more subfolders in it).
I know, this is not a tech forum. But people can be nice here, you know... :)- Also: I've been forced many times to switch off my Mac by pressing The Button, cause it was just hanging and hanging...popovich

This what my environment looks like:
I have a MacBook Pro with 2 systems Installed: OSX and XP via bootcamp. On OSX, bootcamp parition is hooked to Parallels, so I can use XP by starting VM.
I also have an old HP laptop that also runs XP and I use remote desktop to get access (mac to hp, hp to mac). Two, I have worked in workplaces where Windows was the primary system, but we've never had problems with access to network shares while using Macs from time to time. Mac had different accounts/users but while connecting to the Windows network share, we were using AD accounts. So each time when we were mapping network share on mac, we were asked to provide windows credentials.
- I had this EXACT setup at my old job, and I use this same set up currently at home minus the XP box. Works flawlessly.elahon

I personnaly use network magic,
I still have a machine running Xp and it is the only program that allows me to deal with the numerous internet devices connected to my home networks

We have similar issues at work. Sometimes the fileserver can be super slow. Taking up to a minute just to open one directory. I connect through smb and afp on this particular server is much worse. Our techs put ExtremeZ-IP Print Support on the server to alleviate some issues but I don't really see what that does.

we had better luck with our macs connected to a linux fileserver than a windows one... but that was years ago..

I have a MacBook Pro and I LOVE IT.

It does seem the dodgyness of Winblows servers is fine if you have a huge IT department of cheetos-munching server-rebooting overweight guys wearing polo shirts and listening to talk radio all day long while living in the glass cage full of servers and fans and wires and occasionally fixing the exchange server for the boss....
But for those of us with small offices and real work, a linux fileserver just works....

I've been thinking about a Linux server already, but I fear to have the same problems (maybe from a different perspective) on a system, which I hardly know how to admin. That would be really pretty.......
Tell me about your Linux setup. Also, any backup solutions?

You need a decent sysadmin to figure out what bit of config you've botched, this stuff isn't difficult but you have set it up carefully. The bit about it working with one mac but having issues when the other starts up is a smoking gun. Perhaps Windows gets confused and can't tell them apart or perhaps you've configured them to appear identical to Windows. For starters are both Macs capable of working fine on their own? If so you have a config issue, if not then that Mac or the Windows config for it has been set up wrong. I'd start by looking for some kind of DHCP issue, when both Macs are up check what their IPs are, they should be different.

uhhh, macs run windows. and linux.
- dskz0
yes blame your hands.

Both Macs work fine on their own.
Both Macs certainly have different IPs (192.168.2.101 & 105) & different names. Both have different user names with their passwords, which now correspond to Windows user names and passwords (I hopes this would help - alas, this is not the case).Anyone in or near Frankfurt/Main who could help?
