I think it'll straighten itself out. Either through accident or war or design.
look at this map, areas like northern india, Bangladesh and parts of china are overpopulated compared to the rest of the world, but their populations are thriving and continuing to grow, their consumption seems to be sustainable.
Could the whole planet be so densely populated and still have enough resources to feed everyone? sure if we all lived off a bowl of rice a day and gave up $5 lattes and 20oz steaks.
