I think it was spam bots so they needed to work out some way of stopping them from getting on here. Not sure what happened there.
My suggest would be a sub-forum that would act as a probation area that noobs have to go into. After a short period of posting in this a few mods that have the power to grant access to the main community when they are certain they are real people with something to offer.
I've seen that work on other forums and it works a treat.
