    Without looking it up or knowing for sure, i've heard martial arts professionals say that if it's clearly as a last resort, (ie, you've tried to diffuse the situation, you've attempted to leave the situation and/or cannot leave the situation) then you are in the clear. But that's assuming you didn't start the trouble and there are witnesses who will give statements that you didn't start it and tried to avoid it.
    i think once you deviate from the last resort status, i would imagine it is a sliding scale as to what the perceived and actual threat was, who was at fault, etc. The more it looks like you are some asshole who wanted to karate chop someone to death, the less kind the law will be to you
