This is an interesting challenge, and one I've come across many times in similar situations. Since there is no universal symbol people recognize for different types and qualities of metals, you can feel free to be abstract. There definitely will have to be descriptive text to go along with them anyway, since the icons alone won't communicate.
For this ask, I would explore geometric groupings. For example: a tight cluster of small circles for cast iron; tight group of parallel lines for steel; wavy lines for heat treatment; slanted lines for sharp.
