It was possible with liveConnect parameter enabled under object tag in html..this would allow you to communicate and command movie playback in your flash movie from JS. However this never actually saw any major purpose because it was made to work only on PCs and IE. Then they came out with better object tag parameter integration and localConnection that allows you to communicate with 2 separate swf files in the same page, completely avoiding HTML completely. Also, there's flash remoting, but since you asked this I don't know if you would be experienced enough to deal with that.
