Pop-ups suck because there tedious and intrusive. They sometimes get lost when the bigger window in the foreground gets clicked by accident.
Pop-ups suck for many reasons, one more might be because it distances the displayed material from the body of a site.
Kev's layout provides a great way to integrate the visuals strait into the body of the site too, which could make the notion of pop-ups even worse (if people visit and say to themselves, "...it would be nice if these visuals were displayed in that big square on the right").
