i'm planing to buy external HD as i'm tired of removing my files at the nd of tehs ememster from school's computers. Thething is that most computers i'm working on at school are Mac while at home i'm working on PC. Abviously i won't be able to use FCP fils onPremiere, but i do want to have access to my captured movies. In other words i need external HD that can be hooked to Mac and PC. Is it possible?

format the HD in PC format first that way it can work on both. I use a cobra drive, but lacie makes a badass drive too. Make sure you dont buy a shitty drive b/c I have had friends lose lots of files b/c of poor firewire connects. It is depressing.

Maxtor's look the best now. They've got a 200bg one for $400. Not bad. Check out the reviews, the new ones shine. That'll be my next purchase (I believe the new ones are both firewire, and USB 2/1 compatible).

Do you guys know anything about the Acomdata 60 gig FW? It's what I have now and if you guys have heard anything about them crashing...I'm basically asking because it was pretty cheap...

Hmm....the OWC Firewire drives seem to be priced a little better for the GB to price ratio......would be nice to have all the space in one box though. (120GB w/2 or 8 MB buffer Oxford 911@ 7200rpm for around $260 http://macsales.com )
I have some older Firewire drives that seem to be in similar boxes that have really loud fans in them. I was thinking bout just taking the fans out but I worry about overheating.......Are the fans unnecessary and people just figured this out or ar the newer drives different in how they handle heat.
I would hate to ruin a drive just cause it's noisy.........any ideas??
