I didn't post this thread to talk about negative comments.
Although, you can toss that in the mix.
I started the thread because I have noticed designers to be negative about very general things. Even the whole "discunctional" era of design where everything is bad. Designer who see it to be cool if they hate everything. Not just design. But to these people, everything sux.
And, your comment about me dissing negative comments was lame within it's self. Constructive Critisism is always good. Your comment, wasn't constructive. Therefor, you don't make sense.
I am all for Constructive Crit. But all the negative attitudes towards, life, work, love and the general things are what I am talking about. I have noticed that designers have these issues. Not to mention that they are always hatin on others work. Just like everyone hates 2A.
Instead of the "it sux! I can do better" comments, where is the real crit?
Back on topic kiddies....
I say, if you love what you do (not where you work) then you have nothing to complain about. Deadlines, bitch ass art/creative directors and middle management will always be. Those are things we should all just get over. Keep it about the art and lets fight to stop the negativity!!!!!
NOW GRAB ANKLE!

can you say SELF ABSORBED?
seriously, I just met with a group of designers and the only negativity flowing around was worry about the world. I've met some great designers who are doing alot to move the field of design forward...and I've met a few who are so vapid that they make themselves irrelevant. yeah.

I think it's misplaced identity. Our culture tells us to find our identity/security in our career. Well what happens when that career goes down the toilet? We've blurred the line of demarcation. Our identity/security needs to be in something more constant... something more absolute.

It's hard to stay positive when some non-design type is behind your back telling you (or rather shouting at you since he or she is talking louder than average -- and that's always condescending) to change this shape to orange, no change it to blue -- now do this -- now do that. And it becomes ugly and a waste of time.
Constructive criticism is fine but some of these people like to just boss you around, telling you how to do your job.
Also sucks when you're treated badly, paid badly, the job market is grim, not getting paid for work done, lack of job security...
This is my first post :)

just to concur with what some other people have written above, designers are forced to deal with a lot of negtivity... i'm sure we've all slaved away on projects we thought were great and had someone tell us they were shite... this being the most difficult when you have no respect for that person's taste, but theyre in a position to force us to compromise our work. some of that negativeity is bound to come out here.
pretty easy to lose your self confidence in this profession too... people a little down on self confidence do tend to be a bit more negative.
but, sometimes negativity spurs thought, so its not always a bad thing. the discussion would be pretty lame if we always agreed on everything.
i think our community could be more supportive of each other sometimes... in an attempt to generate good karma i once vowed to send an email to the creator of any site i was impressed by... it only lasted about half a day though. maybe i'll try again.

"humans generally base their lives on the misery they feel instead of the joy. it is basic human nature"
Very true, ever notice how happiness only lasts for a brief moment. Where as pain can stay with you for ages. Thats a fuckt up thing we have

If you guys want negativity come on over to Archinect! Nothing worse than working on a project for months, even years, just to have it value engineered to nothing. And that's if it even gets built.
At least with graphics it comes and goes rather quickly.

hmmm.... I tried more sex but it makes my peepee burn afterwards.

I read an article recently that creative types are much more likely to be manic depressive.

With all of these comments in mind. Isn't it really about the art? Didn't you get into design to be able to produce artwork?
Wouldn't it be a good idea to just get over people telling you what to do? It's part of the job. You will always have someone telling you what to do. Even if you have your own practice, your clients will tell you what to do. And we do have to find the wrong in our designs and negativity is always around us, but instead of getting hurt or taking it personal when you get good crit., I think it would be a better idea to just find a solution with in yourself to the problem at hand. After all, that is our jobs. To find creative solutions to creative problems.
What matters, in this case is to just be happy that you are doing what it is you love. And, if you are not, it is as simple as getting another job.
As a community, we should be more supportive of each other. And opinion is always subjective. So it shouldn't matter what others think. Unless you are designing something for the masses, then accepting constructive crit. might even help you out.
Their are many things in life to be negative about. If a creative director has 3 designers that hate him/her and are always negative, it will reflect in the way this person treats their designers. It's simple logic.
I left my last job because I was unhappy. I took a pay cut for a few months and now I have my own company. It may be hard to change your situation, but once you do, it works out. Just because we are not happy where we are at, doesn't mean someone else wouldn't be.
WORD UP! Lets all hold hands and make happy sounds!
Fresh!
