Before you touch the mouse imagine you are the client and then ask yourselves few questions:
1. Why are you doing this in the first place.
2. What do you want to say (communicate) to the wider audience.
3. Who will be seeing it?
4. Define some style that you'll be incorporating - modern, vintage look, free hand, abstract, etc.Write everything down. Sleep over it. Then go back to your computer.
Bhamm!!! It will appear on the screen.

1. shut down your computer
2. take a sketchbook
3. and a sharp pencil
3a. an eraser
4. the book "TYPO - when, who, how"
5. draw!because when you start working with computer first, you'll think the first thing you've made is the final one.
btw: the book "TYPO - when. who, how" has 600 pages with designers arranged alphabetical from the Renaissance -> 1996!

I disagree. You don't need a pad and paper to draw. I suck at drawing with me hand unless I'm looking at the object. I'm better with the computer.

clone, it was just a suggestion for this juststarteddesigner with his bluemanlogo.
those people normally only use the few systemfonts installed.
and i think when you use pencil and eraser - things don't look that final till you're completely content with what's on the paper and then use the computer.

its sad that you are getting so many negative posts. Funny thing is I asked people to support me in decorating my home I guess because they cant post anything evil in that thread.
I think you should look around at a lot of logos...all different kinds so you can get idea on what good logo design is...its gonna take you some time dude

573 - I don't think there are that many negative posts - I think there are a lot of good suggestions from people who think that the logo needs a bit of work.
You yourself have given a suggestion. You're not saying it's perfect.
And as for only posting things that people can't say bad things about, that's p-a-t-h-e-t-i-c.

I haven't read all replies but this is my first thoughts.
Try no 5 without underline and move tha man one man width to the left. use one weight smaller (light) in 'design' to make some more contrast. and make it all solid, no outline. outline will be an issue when you come to resizing the logo later for print or web.

Thanks everyone.
These pointers really help me out. I got some sugestions from ppl by email. They really help. Looking at the first logo I also don't like it anymore. I plan on reworking the logo and having several of different versions of it. Once I have something to show I'll post them up and you guys can critique them.
Thank you fellow NTers

We wanna help you(and spank yuor sorry ass at the same time, so wipe your eyes and listen to people.
stewarts:
1. shut down your computer
2. take a sketchbook
3. and a sharp pencil
3a. an eraser
4. the book "TYPO - when, who, how"
5. draw!is good adwise, good history, master typography in that book. Check my first post for way to work through your creative thoughts, and here´s some book titles. They are old(kind off), but some good examples and advise there.
"Designing identity" by Marc English
"Working with computer type" by Rob Carter
"How"magazine I think is good too.
Hang in there, kid, don´t turn blue in the face; QBN loves you

Listen to Panther.
I am all about ass-ripping critiques.
I went to a college that had a bunch of whiney ass babies who never said a single ill word about anyone else's work.
I sat there holding my tongue for 4 years. No one ever had the guts to say "Your work is so bad - you shouldnt' even be in this major - let alone in this school at all. Go home."
I wish people would've said that every single day - because you know what would've happened?
One of two things:
1. They'd cry, run home tell mommy and quit trying to be a designer because it was too hard and people were too mean. And we'd all breathe a sigh of relief because we don't need a bunch of no-talent lazy bastards in our industry.
2. They'd get pissed off as hell - go home and work their asses off to PROVE they weren't a crappy designer. They'd work hard even just out of spite.
That being said -
You need to toss those typefaces out the window.
Univers is kind of hard to work with - and it needs a lot more space then you're giving it. Looks like you tracked it in. Bad.You want this to look beautiful and perfect. It's supposed to be designed right? You're a designer right?
Look at other logos.
You rarely see letters that close togetherIt's hard to read and it looks gross. There are few typefaces that look good that tight.
I think you need to find a typeface that is more open, well shaped, rounded a little - something that looks sleek.
You can start with any number of sans-serif faces, hunt some obscure ones down, or better yet - start with one and modify it to make it your own.
(yeah, it's hard, and dangerous - but it's worth it)Ditch the man icon.
We know it's a man - it says "MAN"
it's like saying "HELLO" while pounding someone on the forehead to make sure they're listening.Another thing you might wanna look at is how other designers/firms link letter together - or illustrate them so they become more than just letters - they become a form, an object, a shape, an icon, a representation.
There are billions and trillions of examples out there.
and there are a ton of good logo/identity books.
go check one out at your local bookstore.
or pick up an issue of HOW or Communication Arts
Study.

Number 2.
I'd keep the 'man' icon blue, maybe a ligther blue, and change 'blueman' to black and 'design' to grey.
You're gettin' there.
Nice work.
- Blueman0
