I'm so old. I need to put some power behind my PIII 500 mhz with 750 MB RAM.
So...
I want P4 2.6 or 2.8 with 1 Gig RAM.
Now i know i need to upgrade my motherboard and with the new motherboard i need to change my memory.
What kind of stuff should i be lookig for? Any suggestions.
BTW, i'll be using http://www.newegg.com

First things firsts, ask yourself if you need a P4. An AMD with and nforce2 mobo running the memory in dual channel is pretty slick not to mentino on easier on the wallet. Ask yourself what you need the machine to do...

Well, i just did teh price check and it's as follows:
Motherboard: $50
P4 2.6: $210
80 GB HD: $75
CDRW: $30
2x 512 MB RAM: $150I already have good soud and graphic card.
How much is whatever you were mentioning? Also i don't want to stary to much from average setup as i don't want to run into nay problems.

"Ask yourself what you need the machine to do... "
Ask not what your computer can do for you, but what you can do for your machine?

Look at the current PCMag. http;//www.pcmag.com
They've got a how-to on a budget system (AMD) and a highend PIV.
Also ask yourself if you really want to build it yourself.

anywho...

pr2,
you're in luck. I spent like 2 days reading different articles, reviews and other sh*t cause I'm buying 2 new workstations for myself. I also used newegg for parts. The only thing you can't find on newegg.com is the case I want. This case is awesome (CoolerMaster 710-SX2) and it's very hard to find, but it's possible.
To cut the story short here are the configurations that I made for myself. All top parts. Btw, 2 hdds on first workstation are in RAID.

Cheers.

i never thought i would ever say that, but you should really consider buying a complete offer from dell or sony..
i'm so tired of these hardware conflicts and all the shit coming with building your own pc..
plus you have the service...i never buy single hardware again.
- atomica0
Hardware conflicts? Nah... I'd recommend a p4 over an athlon, within the group of friends I hang with the few of us with p4's are running more stable machines. I run a p4 2.5ghz on a nice intel board and lotsa ram, with just an all around decent setup, I have had uptimes of more than 3 weeks, on the internet all the time... Your setup you listed before looks ok.. but you'll need a new power supply as well, the p4's use a 250watt or higher (i prefer 350-400), with a 12v plug otherwise it won't run..... i'm pretty sure the one that came with your p3 won't have that......
- frankbb0
honda, you do know your getting a mobo that supporst a 800FSB and the processor you listed is only 533FSB..
whats the point of that..
you really need the 800 fsb to get the best out of the cantawood.
I opted for the P4P800.. slgihty fast and cheaper than the P4C800...
thats the Springdale.. < its better.
- honda0
yeah he could go with it. i was thinking of price. save a few bucks here and there.
so pr2 if you want to go with a processor with an 800fsb consider these:
Intel P4 478 2.6ghz 800fsb (retail box w/fan) $212
Intel P4 478 2.8ghz 800fsb (retail box w/fan) $285
intel P4 478 3.0ghz 800fsb (retail box w/ fan) $391
i prefer the p4c800 mobo's. especially considering how robust the board is. it is more server oriented but should do well on that machine i spec'd. expandable!

I got 400 wat case and all theother stuff (remember i'm looking for power-on-budget).
Is that mothb OK:
http://www.ecs.com.tw/products/p…With this processor:
CPU: 2.6GHz
Type: Pentium 4 Northwood
Cache: 512K
BUS: 800 Mhz
Socket: 478And this memmory:
Apacer 512MB DDR PC3200 RAM 32X8 MOSEL Original Chipset CL=3 - OEM
184-Pin, DDR400???
- frankbb0
looks good to me..
i would try and push for a better motherboard.. you will see the results..
i would just do a price check on a P4P800
or a similar board.. not that i have anything against the one you want to buy, but I can say personally that p4c800 and p4p800 are rock stable, and easy to set-up.
