i have many mixed emotions right now. i have all of his albums including the heatmiser albums. i've seen him live once in nyc. i'm really angry because we will not get to hear any works in the future. i remember listening to either/or nonstop during really hard times in my life. every time i put it on it really breaks me down and makes me think. i am very sad for his loved ones, but i know he was probably contemplating suicide constantly. i'm not a kevorkian type person, but i read about his previous drug problems and things like that. he's in a better place, but we will all miss him very much. i still can't believe it, i was thinking of going to see him at his next show. a fellow brooklyn born has departed. rest in peace, elliott.

Shocking....
Saw him last year in SF. Even though he had trouble remembering his amazing lyrics, it was a very moving concert...I can't get "Angeles" (Either/Or) out of my head now..argh!!
triple R.I.P...

I hate to say this, but would he be getting this coverage across several mainstream news sites (cnn, msnbc, drudgereport, washington post) had it not been for the Grammy nomination and performance?
I only ask that because talent is talent, he had it, and that's the bottom line. It's a shame to think that perhaps without that very mainstream notoriety years ago at the Grammys this wouldn't get covered.

didn't know him either but it seems like he touched a lot of people

How come no one has said how fucking badass Mr. Smith was? He syabbed himself in the chest. He is now making Kurdt look like a pussy.

I was a big fan for a while now. About 4 years ago Elliot played at the Troc in Philly. The day of the show he went into a small sandwich shop that my girl worked at and got lunch. My friend Eric happened to notice him and started shootin' the shit. Elliot invited Eric and 5 guests (me included) to the show for free. After his set he came upstairs to the small bar and sat down for a beer. No one even realized it was him. I walked up and started thanking him for a wonderful night. We talked for 2 hours and exchanged contact info. he called me a couple times and last time he was in Philly and asked if I want to come see the show, I had work that night. He was a great dude.

This was one of the most crushing things I have heard in a long long time...it was inevitable but completely unexpected. Having spent much time in many parts of the country listening to Elliott has really made it feel like a soundtrack to my life.
For a while I thought that Good Will Hunting was one of my favorite films of all-time and really it hit me 3 years ago that it was Elliott that made the film. The Tenenbaums wouldn't be the Tenenbaums without Elliott. I'll never forget interviewing Mary Lou Lord at the pinnacle of her career and having her admit that Elliott's throw away song was better than anything she wrote...
Now if only Quasi's Poison Well wasn't prophetic...
