Why are anglo-saxon speaking countries (or its people) usually so inept to learn and speak other languages? Is that politics or just something that occurs naturally? No irony. Just curiosity.

Grantimus Boovayon stepped out of place,
to preach with a fervour, his improvised Grace,
His sermons were weak but his vowels were long,
so he shunned the pentameter and got the words wrong.- Margaret Thatcher, 1971.

This really interests me too. I often wonder about this because I would give anything for the thrill of being able to confidently talk to someone in their language rather than feel ashamed and lazy becuase they have to stoop to talk to me in the language I understand. Its very humiliating having to talk to everyone in English regardless of where they're from.
I think its a class system thing. Its always been very middle class to study languages. A bit aspirational and above the station for a strong working class ethic infused with pride.
English the natural language of air traffic though. Any traffic tower in any airport in the world and the communication is in English. All international pilots must speak english. All UN translations are by default to English, and then each deligate is responsible for translating that to their language... otherwise you'd have hundreds of translators with individual specialisms.
Language is the operational language of the modern world. That has to be asa result of being the dominant empire at the birth of industry.

"Its always been very middle class to study languages."
Oh come on, horp...
How can you state something like this?
I don't grasp your class/language theory a bit. Not now. Latin and French were targeted learnings two centuries ago - but that doesn't make any sense now. At least here it doesn't (I'm not challenging you).

(I'm not challenging you).
No I know. I think the hangover from the dominance was lazyness and arrogance. We don't learn languages because we don't have to... everybody speaks English. When I was a small boy in the 70's we used to go on package holidays to Majorca every year. The tourist trade had only recently arrived there from England, but it didn't arrive and respectfully speak the language of the island... we all just spoke VERY LOUDLYO, AND PUTTO LETTEROS, ON THE ENDS OF WORDSO" and we called everyone Pedro, because this was 'funny'.
That's how much respect there was for other languages and other nationalities by the first invasion of package holiday brits abroad.
