I'm FINALLY talking to you from my "fully working" hackint0sh
- Horp0
Hey you know what Jaline I think maybe I should keep my gicleee views to myself and take on board what Rand said... you buy the art no the means of reproduction. I know you love that Tomer H piece and I sort of feel bad that I might be sowing seeds of doubt that prevent you from buying it.
Fuck it, maybe I'm just being too precious in a world that dismissed quality and craft as irrelevent five years ago.
I might just start doing giclées myself. Fuck it, if people want to give me 100£ for a bubblejet, why should I worry about it.
BUY, BUY BUY!!!
- Jaline0
No, I appreciate your input. And Rand's too. It's nice to hear from people who actually have experience with this kind of thing.
(I don't have the money or the space to keep buying stuff anyway, so if I find something I really want I'll buy regardless, since his signature will be on it. But I don't feel like it at the moment.)
- I have no experience********
- Well, you sound like you know things.Jaline

Spooky, I hear what you're saying. But seriously? I mean if we all commit to craft and quality then we may actually make some progress in this world. I know the world threw out any notion of value, quality, craftsmanship, longevity, etc, long ago but..... Aw c'mon, let's make stuff that lasts and haz the qualiteez.

Honestly, I'd feel like a total scammer if I were selling giclées. Our designjet has lightfast ink and I'd still feel like a cunt. Maybe just me...

Is Rand trying to be "with it"?

"but then how are masses supposed to afford these awesome prints?"
Yeah fuck it, that's what they're for. Cheap prints. I just... my gripe, and my original point is that the vendors masquerade their product behind fancy words and people believe its something its not.
- Jaline0
^ I agree with the "being honest" thing.
I do thing there should be cheaper print alternatives available as well, which I noted in the thread you started before, Spooky (in which you asked what kinds of prints people would like).
- ********0
Ya, I guess that honestly plays into it. Ink/bubblejet outputs are not archival or really long-lasting. I guess most people don't want an archival piece, but at a 100 bucks/quid/whatever a print, you'd expect longevity.
There's also the question of limited edition. With a true limited edition print (be it litho, gravure, whatevs) the edition is run and the quality slightly changes print to print. The lower the edition number, the higher the perceived quality / value of the print. Also, if you re-run the edition there's no guarantee that it'll be exactly the same because the ink mix could be ever so slight off, etc.
With inkjet output you can just push another copy, voila! It's more of a print-on-demand situation than a limited edition....- Like my bazooka prints. Every one is different an I can only get about 10 before the plate degenerates. NOBODY CARES THOUGH!Horp

- ...but I don't know what made it YOUR house.MrOneHundred
- That's interesting. Maybe prints were everywhere and a Backstreet Boys poster was up?Jaline
- No. It was a big house, a very girly room, but no posters. I was going to go through your things, but...MrOneHundred
- I don't have a girly room...Jaline
- But I guess I did?Jaline

I'm the last one here. In my class. Just sitting here. Working on After Effects stuff. My program advisor came in, and almost didn't notice I was still in here. Walked in. Walked out. Awkward times.

Hey Jaline, do you have family over in Sri Lanka?
Are they in the North?
It was just on the news here. Seems the Tigers are on their last stand now according to the government's assesment. I've never really understood the Sri Lanka situation. Like who are really the good guys and who are the bad, whether its motivated by religion or something. I should google up a wikipedia.
You ever been there?
- Thanks for noticing/asking.Jaline
- Ah! Seriousness in the blog. I see.MrOneHundred
- Jaline0
I almost posted something about that, Horp, but didn't know where to start.
It's all about land. Singhalese vs. Tamils. My sister was the president of the Tamil Student's Union at her university, so she has been going to rallies and protests at Parliament. I think I will join them at the end of February, although I don't have a strong view about supporting one side or the other.
My family is Tamil. The Tamil Tigers = terrorists to most countries, freedom fighters to others. Most Western countries support the Singhalese government in Sri Lanka right now. I don't think the Tigers kill as many people as the Singhalese do, but, the bottom line is that innocent lives are still lost.

Sounds like a lot of propaganda used against the Tamils. The Government (or so the BBC report anyway) are being criticised for putting the public at risk with their bombing, even causing some civilian deaths, and yet are saying that the Tigers are using civilians as human sheilds.
I was going to ask you the other day, just out of noseyness, where your dad lived in the UK and how he found it when he was here. Just ignore if you don't want to reveal fambly details though eh.
- The media are always just recycling the same propoganda tools. It's becoming very obvious.MrOneHundred
- He lived in London. Not sure where, but he studied Engineering at a college there. I'll ask him later.Jaline
- From pictures, I can tell that he met a lot of friends there, and had good times. It was the 70s/80s, after all.Jaline
- But also a TERRIBLE time to be 'asian' in England. Wonder if he experienced horribleness here.Horp
- I don't know about that stuff. He doesn't talk about everything.Jaline
- I'm sure he mentioned the racism before. Which is hard to detect without asking outright.Jaline
- Of course. I hope he didn't experience anything harsh.Horp
- I hope so too.Jaline
- Please tell him someone in England says hello and that we're not all idiots. Or maybe don't, mind seem odd HAHAHorp
- LOL, he doesn't dislike everyone there.Jaline
