I never knew the old Vienna before the war with its Strauss music, its glamour and easy charm. Constantinople suited me better. I really got to know it in the classic period of the black market. We'd run anything if people wanted it enough and whom had the money to pay. Of course a situation like that does tempt amateurs but, well, umm, you know they can't stay the course like a professional.

I was hanging out in nightclubs in the city since I was a teenager. In my twenties, I took one of my friends from the suburbs into the city and showed him around, got him in. Somehow, he wound up owning two of these nightclubs. And now he's married to an actual Malaysian princess and lives in a compound on top of a mountain. Swear to christ.

I'm sorry; don't listen to me. I'm on mescaline. I've been spaced out all day.
Did you say you were on Mescaline?
I did indeed. Very much so.

Every now and then when your life gets complicated and the weasels start closing in, the only cure is to load up on heinous chemicals and then drive like a bastard from Hollywood to Las Vegas ... with the music at top volume and at least a pint of ether...

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side...

The crickets and the rust-beetles scuttled among the nettles of the sage thicket. "Vámonos, amigos," he whispered, and threw the busted leather flintcraw over the loose weave of the saddlecock. And they rode on in the friscalating dusklight.
