Hello everybody!!
I would like to get some opinions about my website and my graphic design work. So if you have the time take a look at http://www.dkatsafouros.com
I'm more interested in comments about my work cause the design of the web pages is temporary.
Thanks in advance.

well, it's right to the point . . .
Problem is, I'm not sure whether it's a portfolio for - design, or illustration.
also, you might want to show any less busy work you have.
Most of your stuff looks a little . . . rave-flyer-ish.
I consider this a bad thing . . .

Okay, I'm going to be completely honest and say what *I* think:
When I first open it, it looks like a kinda mediocre site, it looks "okay" but nothing more. It's like it's missing something but I can't quite put my finger on it. But then I open your portfolio, which showcases some absolutely gorgeous work. I love every piece! What I'm trying to say is that I think you can do a better website than this for your work. Focus a little more on your pieces, make them stand out more in the actual website design. Right now it looks like somebody did the portfolio and somebody else did the site design.
You're definitely on the right track. *Bookmarked* Good luck! Also, the videos rock!

Thanks for your comments!!
Cinder well I haven't thought my work as raveish or flyerish. It's a different opinion and I totally respect that. I think you are right about posting more design oriented stuff, like magazine layouts. It's too uneven right now.
Jox I think that you are right about the site. Yeah it's pretty plain and it doesn't work that well. I made only a week before and I'm planning doing a revision soon. The problem is that I have some designs in mind but I don't know how to make them happen in HTML. These programs (Dreamweaver etc) can be really intimidating and they always do things that you least expect to... I guess I have to try harder to learn them. I'm glad you bookmarked my site.. You're gonna see some changes soon. And I really appreciate your good comments.
What do the rest of you people think. I would really love to hear your comments. They would help me very much.

heya.
First off, your work is excellent and you have a great sense of form and balance. Your styles are distinct and well executed. Your command of texture and color is impressive. I love the work.
Which makes me think that your purpose would be better suited by mapping out how your site works a little better. The counter on the bottom: lose it. It doesn't fit the site style and is a bit amateur, which you are not. Plus, what are you trying to prove with it?
Think about how people move through the site. If one looks at a portfolio piece, there is no secondary navigation to move to the next piece without hitting the back button or clicking the portfolio link again.
Your headers for the pages are well executed, but there is a serious stylistic break between them and the rest of the page. Incorporate that look into the rest of the page and everything will integrate nicely. Your work focuses on typography quite a bit, so integrate your understanding of typographic form into the main pages to make them more interesting to look at, rather than just functional. I'd also make your thumbnails fit a set size for each. They don't gel as a system without consistency of size and shape, and it also throws off the layout otherwise.
Read up on how to embed the quicktimes. People are more likely to look at them if they don't have to download to their desktop.
coming along, dude.

Because the new US cash designs are forgery-proof. They made it so hideous that anyone attempting to look at it in detail will have their retinas burned out.
Although I do like that the eagle is shoving an olive branch into Jackson's ear on the $20. Poetic justice for mass murder.

Wideye, about the banner. It's the only way for me to know if the site is visited or not. And I can track how many visitors per day and other kind of statistics. I'm planning to put an invisible counter. I think it'll make things better. On the movies things, I thought that you couldn't embed mp4 files. Isn't that right? I have made some sorenson codecs that I think will work by default but I'm not sure.
Oh and by the way... Your site is EXCELLENT!!!

honesty:
your work reminds me of what i used to do 6 years ago.
- phobos790
Do you have a website or an online portfolio? I would love to see your work!

Maybe challenge yerself to tackle a differnet style, like strict, formal 'swiss' stylee corporate graphics and see what comes out.

yeap i do.most of people here have seen my stuff in NT, only recently i took it off.
you asked for honesty.

the work looks very dated.
circa 96to be honest i'm suprised at the amounts of good comments youve had.
some of the work looks like the stuff you see in old stock photography or illustrations catalogues.
I'd try and get some 'design' jobs in there if you are promoting yourself as a designer, it all just looks like personal work of the photo/illustration variety
good luck anyway
- phobos790
I have no problem having bad comments. But please explain what part of the work is dated. The typography, the visuals, everything? What would be some good examples of non dated work?
I'm trying to find out the balance here because for me as a creator of the work I can't understand what are the really bad things in my work. Can you give me a specific example of my work that means it's dated? And can you give me an example on my work that doesn't seem as dated?
Cheers!

It sux when someone says it sux without giving any helpful, specific reason why.
Anyhow, your navigation doesn't line up. And when you roll-over on "About Me", there's an underscore before it. Check
It would also be helpful if you somehow highlight the section you're on in the navigation -- not everybody does it, I know. Like when you're in "Portfolio" the "Porfolio" link is red instead of black.
There should be a link back to start.html -- usually the logo or your name in the header would work.
The image in the header is really dramatic. I would make it more dramatic by changing the background from that muted dark dray to a darker gray or black or maybe indigo blue. It could be more dramatic.
I like how on the "About" page you have the last updated date -- it lets people know how new the info on your site is.

i did try to give constructive critisism by saying you need more design pieces in there.
its hard to say why the work looks dated if you honestly cant tell why we say that.
its just all been done a long time ago. (the whole look and feel) and the work hasnt been strong enough to stand the test of time as the style looks, well outdated.
To me it seems like if it had been around in 96 it would have been cool, but now.. well weve all seen it and gone past it.
Your in the UK i take it? you should have a look to see what UK (and other) good designers are producing these days, if your wanting to work in the industry.
get some design books, gather some research, take in whats good and work out whats not.
seeing a peice of good design is like hearing a good idea. it makes you think "shit, i wish i'd thought of that"
keep at it, im not saying im shit hot, im not saying you shit. all im doing is trying to be honest. I hardly ever look at these 'crit this' threads because usually I cant be arsed to type out long replies like these :)
anyway, heres a link to a list of websites that are currently producing (what I consider to be) good graphic design.
http://www.newstoday.com/docs/sh…
sorry for bad spelling, grammer, puntuation but im sleepy and busy.
I hope this helps somehow.
if you think im a twat fair enough, but i was trying to help.
cheers
ps: you said the site was temporary so i didnt comment on that. (like the other guy did( so hopefully this IS of use to you.
check the links. there a re a lot of good companies/designers in there.

the typography on the actual site is ill considered... and the work is kind of speculative... i.e. it's what you would do if you were working somewhere... but it comes acorss unrealistic...
I didn't have time to look at the experimental section... but I feel your portfolio comes across as that? I thought perhaps you'd mixed them up?
I hope this helps.
