MrDobolina,
Is housing and job discrimination a better term?
Better yet , how about Institutionalized Racism?
- lowimpakt0
it may be a blanket term but if you dont have the correct policies and agencies to assess and deal with poverty and social exclusion, right wing attitudes such as 'not everyone deserves a chance' only serve to perpetuate the problem.
- mitsu0
where's the hipocracy in wanting equality for everyone?
- Mimio0
Mitsu,
The hypocrisy exists when a country takes the property and/or lives of a people for it's own benefit and financial gain, then wants to call a truce and act like nothing happened.
- rasko40
because some are more equal than others.
- mrdobolina0
so what do you recommend Mimio, reparations?
- Mimio0
MrDobolina, I'm just defending Affirmative Action as an institutional counter-balance to an outlawed instituional practice.
- ribit0
I don't think they started Affirmitive Action in order to "make choosing easier by just having to choose by race"...
Sometimes the political discussion on here is so laughable it's not funny...
- EMGEE330
It shouldn't be based on race. But think about this:
There are all sorts of organizations for minorities...United Negro College Fund, for example.
Do they give out scholarships or awards to anyone but African Americans?
Nope.
So why, then, should there be a problem with a white organization having an exclusively white scholarship?
- Mimio0
You're missing the point, the white scholarship is a protest against admissions practices of other universities that may reward black applicants and amoung other things attacking Affirmative Actions relevancy.
- tfs__mag0
it's freedom of speech and it's within their legal right to setup a scholarship that rewards specific ethnicities regardless of whether it's a protest or not. get over it
- Mimio0
I never said it was illegal, just in poor taste.

i havent read all the replies to this post but as a white guy myself i think this is the most rediculous fucking thing ive ever heard, it seems like it was only a backlash against scholarships for ethnic people who generally seek help because of limitations our white society created in the first place

True true. if it is scholarship funded privately then they can put whatever guidelines they choose on it. Just the same so can private schools. Now if it is a government grant or public institution then race/gender/ sexual orientation should never be a factor.
- lowimpakt0
"if it is scholarship funded privately then they can put whatever guidelines they choose on it. "
I totally see where your coming from but extension then any organisation has the right to employ who they wish depending on race, any university has the right to admit who they wish on race, any private bus/rail/plane company has the right to refuse service to whomever they wish depending on race. can you see the civil/social precedents that system sets......
- lowimpakt0
sorry: should read as "but by extension"
- Nashville90
Yes and I believe that is wrong for anyone to admit a person based on race/gender/orientation/religon etc... that's the difference between public and private money that's all.

i think we all understand and can appreciate the concept behind affirmative action. the problem is that 'discrimination' is a four letter word and one that makes lawyers drool. we are such a litigious nation that if you look at somone of a different ethnicity, religion, or gender for too long, you're almost guaranteed a lawsuit.
everyone wants equal rights and to end segregation and discrimination, yet they set themselves apart from everyone granting themselves special rights and priveledges.
what justifies this act of activism is that it shows how all of a sudden it's wrong for white people to do what these other 'minority' groups have been doing for years.
- ribit0
And if it is a political protest then it is protected by law (and the US constitution) as well...
- lowimpakt0
any form of discrimination should be challenged. Correct me if im wrong, but my understanding was that many of these funds for minorities were set up because it wasnt possible for minorities to get scholarships/funds etc any other way. Granted, there is still a devisive structure to the system but that is the fault of the policy makers and those running the education system not the scholarship groups.
