I live in NYC and I'm semi-familiar with whats going on with Long Island as my girlfriend and her brother (both into hc) are from there.

dude don't bust his taste- hardcore is based on shitty metal- in reality hardcore was started by a bunch of dudes who don't get into the politics and fashion of punk, and loved Iron Madien, Motley Crue, Overkill, and the likes but couldn't play as good as those bands.
When I think of true old school hardcore I think of NYC- if you ever were at shows in the late 80's early 90's (superboal of hardcore anyone?) - man that shit was intense. And what did most NYC hardcore bands inspire to be....
Shitty Metal.
Its just an evolution of style...

was in 1991 through 1997. You get tired of it after a while and want something with more structure and melody. It comes with getting older, I think.

listen to Motley Crue's "Knock'em Dead Kid" - from "Shout at the Devil"

It's great to listen to old SXE bands when your drinking 40's and smoke bud though- now there are some good times!

I respectfully disagree with that statement about shitty metal Puter.
For me hardcore was really not even about the music as much as it was about the message. I believe hardcore has the same origins as punk but it was the dark politically motivated side of punk. yeah there is political punk but to me punk was about self gratification and getting wasted and rebeling against society and individualism whereas to me hardcore's messages were always based around unity and working to change society's wrongs as a uniform group. Thus some of the names in hardcore... Social Justice Unity is Strength Uniform Choice Chain of strength.
I agree that the musicians were informed by metal riffs and borrowed from metal (and punk) but they never just simply aspired to be shitty metal. They aspired to spread a political message. Just my take from the hardcore experience.

all these "hardcore" bands people are listing that are "new age" are not hard core cause of one thing and that is there is no message in the music.. hardcore is about unity friends and staying tru to what u belive in and. and all these new bands all they sing about is black hair and girls....and drinking...there are some tru hardcore bands still around but most of what people in this thread have been posting is new age metal or scremo....
spirit of 88'

"hardcore" was a lot better when it was wannabe metal and not a marketing scam.
