i would say try to get a secondhand nikon. can't go wrong with nikon. plus all lenses are compatible with any nikon body.

Anything second hand will be good. I like old school manual cameras like Olympus OM2, OM10 etc you can get a body for about £100 and spend the rest of the dosh on a cick ass lens which is the most important part
Don't go too mad with the telefoto though. 28-120 is a good all rounder but you should always have a standard lens (35) if you need a crisp shot

go with a good work horse. I used to have an old pentax k1000. Totally manual. Loved it!
Make sure you get the asahi pentax though, they were solid metal, you could drop one of those bad boys and it wouldn't get a scratch.
They are a bit more expensive than the regular k1000, but they are way better.
With a 50mm lens, you have a really decent camera, think I may pick one up myself. Sold mine a while ago.

i actually own an olympus om2n. it really is a nice camera *but* like most brands, you can only fit olympus om lenses on it which basically means that some lenses are very hard tp get (e.g. fisheye) and therefor are way too expensive. now nikon lenses aren't cheap either but better in quality, as said before, fit all nikon bodies and sometimes are cheaper than olympus om lenses.

if you want something with more electronics inside, try the canon eos 300, first generation + a 50mm. it's all plastic but i had one for 6 years, brought it with me everywhere (even on sailing trips) and it was still working perfectly. very light, discrete camera + sharp and fast autofocus.
