10k without a job, mitsu, but you'd better get one quick! ;)
If you're gonna get a place that's $2k a month (which, if you're single, is a bit much), you gotta add 1.5 times that for deposit. Then add utilities, food (NYC groceries are expensive), subway pass, entertainment, etc.

that's what i thought you meant. i plan on getting a job before the move. doing it the other way sounds too risky.

Another tip to go along with what dippy just said:
Raman noodles are about $.40 just about anywhere. Stock Up!!
- dippy0
But if you head out to Jersey to do your shopping, Ramen's only 10 cents a pop!
- mitsu0
ha, i did the ramen noodles thing over ten years ago when i moved out. never again! i have paid my dues.

remember, most landlord requires that you have a salary that's 40 to 50 x your rent.
if you are lucky and live upper east or something, you can probably do 1500 for a studio. 2k alone is pretty high if you are a designer.

I don't have to eat Raman at all, but still do because it's all I ate when I wasn't making much, and I slimmed down quite nicely then!

Yeah, I don't have to eat Spam at all, but I love it!
mitsu, I know some New Yorkers who barely make their own meals. It's so much more convenient to just eat out all the time. And if you explore a bit, there are places you can get a lot of good food for very little.
But ya can't live in New York and think cheap, unfortunately -- you just gotta suck it up and enjoy what you have.

you actually slim down by eating noodles?
- mg330
I did back then. I was so broke, trying to eat on $5 a week in late 2001 when I moved to Chicago.
When I moved here I weighed about 190 and within 6-8 months was down to probably 165.
That's partly because I was't eating all the crap my parents had been providing when I lived with them before I moved - fried fish, Quizno's, fried chicken, pizza, blah.I usually ate one bag of Raman around 1pm, and 2 packs at 5:30pm and that was it. Had it with crackers.
- usrper0
are you serious?? 3 packs a day... >>

yay! I am moving too in about a month!
Thread's been helpful . . .not too suprising tho

mp33 that is awful!!! u should have just eaten white flour sugar and salt
- mg330
Well, it worked! I kept sending my mom pictures of Richard Ashcroft of The Verve and telling her that's how thin I was.

crap, I was kind of hoping in the next few years to be able to move to NY. Damn, don't know if I could deal with those kind of expenses.
- mitsu0
kStyle, what part of ny?
- kStyle0
well, dunno about where i am living yet, figuring that out now. . .manhattan somewhere. . .looking at the lower east side
