i'm moving to the big apple in april or may and trying to find some apartments to look at when i visit next month.
any recommendations on some good areas. apartments.com isn't helping. so far it seems avg rent is between $1500-2500+. that sound about right?
also, how practical is it to have a car? i don't mind public trans for regular commutes, but i might want to take a drive now and then to get out of the city.

good luck with that mitsu!
did you getta job out there?
- cindsoo0
if you have money to burn get a car, you'll pay more in a parking spot than on food. check craigslist for apts. usually the best source. nofeerentals.com is good. if you want to work with a broker check out benjaminjames.com i like their stuff and douglas elliman though they are pricey.

no not yet, but i have a penchant for getting my carts before my horses.

in philly it is at least $125 - $200 a month for a parking spot...then you pay to park when you drive somewhere else...then for gas...then for insurance...easily $300 a month...it makes me dizzy when i think what it costs in NYC...i once paid $50 to park for 3 hours there...fucking thieves

I would say if you lived in one of the outer boroughs - bk or queens its possible to have a car.
I would look for apartments in DUMBO, Astoria, Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Fort Greene, Long Island City is coming up...
Probably get a better price...

if you wanna keep your car, then live in brooklyn. car is nice to have, but you really don't need it unless you have a house in hamptons and going there every weekend.
rent in manhattan is about 1500-2000 for a studio, and sometimes, if you get lucky, like my friend, you can have a studio with a private roof deck for 1300 in west village. that's the kind of deals you have to keep your eyes on.

mitsu...good luck with the move.
the apt rates you have are more for manhattan, while outside in the other buroughs yo ucan find much larger apts with very easy commutes to anywhere in the city. you also get muc hlarger spaces for the price...consider moving to queens and brooklyn as they are the closest to manhattan. if going for apts outside manhattan get a broker...find an area you like and hit it with a broker doing all the werk...usually the fee is nothing or just firsty month while a broker in manhattan takes 5% of yearly rent...that can be $5k and up plus first and last month and security...looking at close to $10k just for a move in to a manhattan apt...now then you have movers and all...a car is really the most unrealistic material item any new yorker can own...dont do it!!! everything is an easy trip on the subway away or bus or even rent a car...like cindsoo says the price of parking in the city is more than food...so be aware and be very picky!!!good luck!
- mitsu0
yes, i'm looking for something in manhattan.
thanks for all the input!

"a car is really the most unrealistic material item any new yorker can own...dont do it!!!"
haha, i'm glad i asked then!

i had a car when i first moved to the city. i got close to $600 for parking violations. then my side mirror got stolen and got tickets for that too, wtf.... that was all within 3 month after i moved. after that i sold it. i was just too busy partying away in the city. i am sure the same will happen to you...

also a good question is do you have a job that can cover all the billss you are going to intake in the next cooming years you have here?
make a list of things you will need on a monthy to annually basis and plan it out!
manhattan can get way expensive after a few days so plan ahead your financials! and be prepared to shell it all out!
- mitsu0
one other thing. any particular districts that should be avoided?
- cindsoo0
you kinda got to walk around feel it out, see if you want somewhere quiet, something in the middle of it all, near the water. there are good deals in lower east side and battery park city. everything in the middle gets pricey then upper east is good too. when you moving?? my bro is renting his apt soon. . . tonyonetony where you at? talk to him.
- mitsu0
if all goes as planned, i'm looking to move between april and may.
i was looking at upper east side too - but i'm not set on it at all. i'm coming up for 3-4 days next month to get a better idea

epill is right, you need about 10k to move into the heart of city, maybe not so much for brooklyn or harlem area. just be psychologically prepared to give out lots of money and you should be fine.
- mitsu0
10k moving in w/ or w/out a job?
what kind of expenses are we talking here?
- mg330
mitsu I don't live in NYC, but beware of the pay-per-pound buffets...I was at one once around Wall Street and my lunch was damned expensive!
