kOna, only strongbad can do that, you ain't in the strongbad league by far.

I whole heartedly recommend punching with weights in hand. Even after a minute of repetition, you will feel your arms get lighter and moving faster. It will also strengthen your Trapezius and deltoids, since you'll be keeping your arms up and clenched with weight for extended periods, which helps with the endurance bit.
Go a few rounds and your arms are going to feel miiiighty heavy. So this will help.

these would be perfect:

If you are a beginner it would be a good time to focus on technique rather than speed and power. Although punching with weights does improved strength and speed like fate_redux said, it will also cause you muscles to exhaust quicker which will in turn make your technique sloppy. Your muscle memory is still new to this...
fate_redux, I like using these;
you can keep your hands open until impact point and you won't split your eyebrows open when you retract into your defense.

Evan, you box (or something similar)?
Yeah, James, make sure to get your nose insured :)

nice fate, checking out light weights too, i'm sure later on those gloves are gonna feel so heavy
IRN, like bruce lee said, tighten your fist only at point of impact..

Boxing is cool but I'm too scared to actually do it. Fencing is more for me.
I'd rather get stabbed with a sword than break my spinal cord :)
- brandelec0
oh snap you rhymed!
- Jaline0
I know! I was really excited while posting it too.

shadow boxing with weights will develop an awesome case of tendinitis.....I use a pair of 16 oz boxing gloves w/ handwraps. Never anything else.
I see people using weights and sometimes even that silly cord. Not for me, but I don't mean to pop off like I'm the end all newstoday angelo dundee.
Ringside has some great shit...oh and if you go to a real pro gym all your shit will get stolen [no exageration] if you don't watch it. Most gyms are set up where the heavy bags are community and you bring your own gloves, headgear, speed bags, jump rope, etc. Don't make the mistake of going into a gym and using someones private equipment.
I have a 2 string bag in my apt. There is nothing better than catching a Muhammed Ali fight and watching it while pretending to be him dancing around and peppering the shit out of the bag. See I'm not so cool after all...

I would also like to ad that while boxing is a phenomenal way to get ripped and stay fit there are better 'martial arts' that are more practical and have better real life application. I am going to my first Kung Fu class tonight...

remember, those kids are fast as lightning

my buddy took a boxing class for a while. they made him work out so hard that he wanted to puke after the class.
so i decided not to join him.
i watched Cinderella Man this weekend. i could never take that much beating...
Good Luck!

tonx, just my opinion but if you're looking for a practical and better real life appilcation you might want to skip the kung fu unless its win chung and you have alot of time to spare. Muay Tai, Krav Maga, Jeet Kun Do or another art that involves many different disciplines will work better if you happen to be in a fight. Even your boxing will be much more effective than most kung fu's out there...

thanks tk, i remember running and training hard a while back and puking after, worst feeling when your body just gives out, but you feel good later on
- Jaline0
Especially if you have asthma. Then you feel like puking, dying, AND suffocating to death.
- brandelec0
jaline, you have asthma? karate kid had asthma
