Wow, that is really amazing. Best of luck to you. It sounds like you are getting a cool friend out of this as well.
I think one of the best things you can do is be open and honest with him and help him to avoid making the same mistakes that you feel you have made and try to give him the opportunity and encouragement to excel in anything he may be interested in trying. Athletic, academic or otherwise.
