so.. if you have say 1 or 5 million fonts to go through and preview to decide whether you want to keep them or throw them away, what do you use to preview them quickly, without having to load them into suitcase first (as it always crashes unless you do it say 30 a time).. any good free previewers out there for osx?

I wish.

So you;re saying it sucks to have OSX?

I doubt there are a million fonts

i just dumped HEAPS into fontexplorerX the other day - no problems - and its free.
- rasko40
thanks I will try that out

i think the moral of the story is don't steal so many fonts
- horton0
.. that said, i would do the same and dumps large volumes into Suitcase too, but it does seem to be more sensitive to damaged fonts than fontexplorer.
you probably have lots of damaged fonts.

horton - do you think this is a good substitute for suitcase, or should I look to upgrade to that new version they just released?
they are called font libraries k0na, and they give you a disk full of shitty comic sans varients you will (hopefully) never use, thinking that you are glad to have so many fonts.

you only need helvetica--throw the rest away
- rasko40
are you having a snidy jab at the UK design industry there Rand? I think you are you little devil!

when ever i put loads of fonts in font explorer they always come out the same, like 1000 of frutiger, any one had similar problems?
- horton0
i moved my library over to Explorer from Suitcase a week or so ago before... originally dumped in about 14000 fonts.. trimmed it back to about 9000 now.
its handling them well so far.
Suitcase was doing ok with the volume but still hanging up on lots even though i run my library through FontDoctor.
i haven't gone back and installed the new Suitcase Fusion yet. i still do prefer the look and feel of Suitcase over Explorer.

can you... like print out the preview of all the fonts you have in a single click?
i don't wanna go through them one by one.

listen, if I was as good as you UK designers, I would only use helvetica, too

i'm a bit more selective with my fonts. i try to keep my wingdings and gill sans down to only a hundred or so per variant.
- rasko40
cool, thanks for the help.. one of these days I will clean up my dirty font habits, it drives me insane.

I was about to ask the same question about previewing unloaded fonts. It seems to be a double edged sword, you can't preview a font without loading it, but I don't want to load what I don't like, so I want to see it first.

not what you're looking for, but i find this to be pretty handy:
http://www.stcassociates.com/lab…even better is to download the .SWF and run it locally.

You could use... but it would take like forever if you had 1 million fonts
