i organize by foundry but nothing is going to do it for you automatically, unless fonts in the future get some kind of tag system like ID3s.

If you're on a PC, Typograf is kinda keen.

I have about 70k or so fonts and I've been able to use it to print out sample sheets etc. I wouldn't use it to install or uninstall fonts (I use Suitcase instead), but its great for browsing through font folders.

I'm considering organizing by Foundry in FontExplorer but then adding comments like, Serif, Sans-Serif, Blackletter, etc., so I can create smart sets if I need to that have the genre of font I'm looking for. Does this seem like a good way to do this?

(Feb 3 06, 11:53)i haven't played with the commenting in ExplorerX, but i don't think the info is attached to the font file... so all your commenting work will be lost if you need to rebuild your library.
not worth it imho.
fonts are not the same as mp3s which are modifed with track info.

Thx for the info Horton. I certainly don't want to waste my time with commenting if that's the case. So basically I just need to pick one or the other? Foundry or Category?

organize your fonts into folders (ie. House Industries, or Slab Serifs) on your HD, and then drop the entire folder into Explorer as a set, and it will be named as per the folder.
that way your fonts will always be organized as per the folders on your HD, no matter what font browser you use.

Ok, I guess i'm leaning more towards organizing by Foundry then.

(Feb 3 06, 12:31)"i'd recommend doing both Foundry and category... but that takes patience and a good memory of your fonts.
good luck.

So i've been working with Linotypes FontExplorer and it's been kind of a pain. When I drag a bunch of font folders into the Source window it either imports them all individually or as one set. And if I create a folder and try to import fonts from linotype that are in folders, it wants to do the same, except not import them into the folder so I end up having to import font sets 1 by 1 and then move them manually into the folder i want them to be in. I also can't select more than 1 set at a time in the source window. Have other people run into these problems?

Seriously man, Cull your fonts, I think you'll find that you don't even come close to using a quarter of them. Your better off having a few that you use often but you know how to use well.
