I thought Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, and Clockers were all excellent, and I think if you make 3 good films that puts you in some impressive company. Unfortunately, Lee 's also made a lot of shite, and his obsessive need to inject race commentary into every film, especially when presented in such a simple, trite manner, gets old quickly.

ask him..
'whats a nubian?'lol..
jez kiddin.
i think he's prolly one of the best directors working...he may get a bit heavy handed with the race stuff...but what the hell...thats a message that can't be laid out often enough sometimes...
seen most of his work, but for some reason i still have a big fondness for school daze...
do the right thing was fantastic as well..
but like a few of you above...25th hour blew my mind..

i found it kind of weird that david benioff (who wrote the book '25th Hour', also excellent) ripped off that scene from 'do the right thing' and then spike lee directs it, and then adds his own flair to it.
"I want you to make me look ugly..."

Clockers is one of my favourite films.

i don't think it's exactly a rip off in either situation. Not an uncommon style of stylized rhetoric.
- mattyd040
well, david benioff admitted it was as such...

Oh.
Well then fuck him!
:)
- mattyd040
haha, true! seeing as he is the guy who adapted 'troy' for the screen...

no other director has been more important to a 'culture' than Spike Lee.

'She's Gotta Have It', Spike's first, was a classic too.
'Bamboozaled', still probably the most difficult film for me (and others) to watch again. Truly underrated and underappreciated...same can be said for Spike's career.
how can race/racism be a trite subject matter when we are faced with it everyday? some ignore its problems all together.
To me there is very little difference from Chappelle and Lee. Lee just doesn't shower the issues with good humor. As Chappelle said, there is an huge elephant in the room...lets talk about it.

(Aug 14 06, 12:04)Gotta disagree with you there, matey. I like Spike too, but Godard, Truffault, and a number of others, like Cassvetes and such, made such enormous impacts and completely changed the way films are made across the board.
Not saying Spike is not in that category EVENTUALLY, but let's wait and see.

not saying movie culture, i am saying 'black culture'.
- jondj240
who's touched their own culture more?

Wilt Chamberlain?

MLK?

(Aug 14 06, 12:04)Race itself is not trite subject matter. In fact, I wish more artists confronted this topic in their work. But it's like that horrid movie Crash. It presents everything in stereotypes, and fails to account for the grey space in between. It's like Spike Lee makes every white cop racist. Okay, we know about the problems with the NYPD and the LAPD. But not every white cop assaults black men with plungers. Not every Italian guy compensates for his desire to be more black by resorting to racist insults. Not very Korean grocery store owner is exploiting the black community. The scene that MattyD pointed out is a perfect example. Spike copied the exact same scene in Do the Right Thing for 25th Hour. How is that evolving as a thinker and as an artist? How is that really getting at the foundation of racism (which, interestingly enough, has more to do with class than skin color)?
- harlequino0
oh wait you mean movies, right.
I dunno.
Probably Godard for the French. And Fellini for the Italians.

(Aug 14 06, 12:12)Sweet fucking Christ it's nice to hear someone else say that!
That douche has to be one of the most arrogant and irresponsible writers and filmmakers ever.
- mattyd040
one thing he hasn't tackled yet are vietamese nail salons.

Jungle Fever doesn't touch on the grey area's of race/racism?
I watched a Fellini movie last night. great stuff.
modern day director that has had an impact on a culture as Spike?
Also what scene in Do The Right Thing, do they say 'i want you to make me look ugly?' Not seeing the correlation between the two. help me?
agreed about Crash.
