Q - designer, developer or both?

It seems to me that most companies out there are looking for either a designer or a developer, but not both. What hope is there for someone that is stuck in the middle with skills on both sides of the fence?
Over the years I've drifted more and more away from design, but would not consider myself one or the other these days. My strengths I guess are in that I know both worlds, but not necessarily top-shelf one way or the other. (I would consider myself more of a front end developer than backend) I actually really enjoy my current position being able to design and then code all of the interfaces for the applications my company develops. I love it. I just don't see that being a vary realistic position in the market (?)
Just curious what other people experience out in the market. If anyone else out there is in the same boat, can relate, or can offer any insight into what is out there and what people are looking for. It's been a long time since I've been out in the job market.
Typical Newstoday smartass remarks are welcome, but I'm seriously hoping someone can offer some insight here. The company I work for is heading into the toilet and I need to start looking from something else. Kinda freaked out about the whole thing to be honest.
Thanks guys.

In Larger agencies, the positions are defined : designer, or developer. Which has it's positive and negative aspects. But in most studios, or smaller agencies, a designer is still expected to front end code. I'd sooner have it that way personally.

Thanks for the response canuck.
That's kinda what I figured regarding company size.

I do both. Design and then build. Which is handy as I am currently working remotely.

I do both, so I'm the one who gets wound up when designers just say do this do that without understanding the implications... can be annoying, bless 'em! :D

yeah, same here.......
I do both.
I guess you have to decide at some point if you want to work in a big place......
i think there should be a position for people that can do both too.
maybe if you have a strong graphics portfolio, you could go for a designer post and put your dev. skills as an extra

in house work, for all its downfalls, can be quite good for someone like you... or me...

I do both to varying levels of success...
I can’t stand not knowing how to do something really, and don’t like relying on someone else, or having to rely on someone else I guess.
