just fyi- the drives are a sinch to replace/upgrade in these machines. if it saves you loot on the front end- you can upgrade the drive after a while for far less moo-lah...

This will be my 3rd laptop in 3 years. The first one died from the aforementioned cream soda incident, and the second one is doing fine but I'm selling it.
I really want to keep this one for a long while, which is why I want to make sure that it's worth it. And has lots of hard drive space.
ribit, I also find that it's more worth it to just buy a new laptop when something goes horribly wrong instead of trying to fix it. My repairs weren't possible, but if they were they would've cost around $600.
- ribit0
oh, and if you are looking for good investments, don't buy laptops, go long on pork bellies instead.
- ribit0
oh, no only 1 MBP.. (it's so confusing, they're all silver). But I do need to buy a shiny new one any day now...

I have too many laptops... currently 2 black Powerbooks (worthless), 2 G4 Powerbooks, and 2 MBPros...really must sell some now that I have had them fixed (I usually find its best to buy a new laptop rather than deal with all the problems of what to work on while its getting fixed...then forget to sell them).
I think this is why I'm poor.
Anyone need a Powerbook in London?
for that matter a 1GB Jaz drive? Antique!

ocd must be a bitch.

How long have you had yours for?

I always get Applecare, but inevitably the laptops succumb to other fates that arent covered... either they fall off the end of airport X-ray belt cos they didnt build a high enough ledge (doh!), or I drop coke on keyboard (doh!), or bag strap breaks, and laptop gets dented corner (d'doh!)
When that stuff isnt happening I have stuff that is covered under warranty, like spotty screen (replaced), screws falling out of the display casing (fixed), rubber feet falling off (they send a little bag of rubber feet), motherboards dying (replaced)...

Yeah, that's basically how my first laptop died. My weapon of choice was cream soda :(
- ribit0
I spilled half a can of coke on my keyboard on a plane... sticky keys for months and then the drive failed..
= a £250 coke.

i like how you've taken one cover and paired it with another.

and I have the original keyboard cover from the packaging to keep it clean when I'm using my ext keyboard.

that said I met with somebody at work the other day who had a orange plexi cover on his mbp and I thought it was lame. My laptop has been with me for 2 years now and it looks new.
if you're that anal then you won't drop it or eat or drink near it anyway.

"Too bad...I like some of your work too.
Not even sure why I'm giving you the time of day right now."
It's cute how you throw those jabs in there, kinda like you've actually convinced yourself that you're anything more than a young girl taunting her virgin snatch to a bunch of guys who have probably never smelled it in the first place.

I'm more wary about getting an entire cover for my laptop since it would have to be specifically made for the macbook with holes and cutting so that the heat is not retained.

I agree with you ribit about Apple having more choices, or at least with the other companies being more present in local stores, but that's just not the case. And it sucks that there is no Apple store here in Ottawa (I suspect there will be one within the next 5-10 years though).
"I think permament covers on anything are going a bit too far.. like leaving plastic covers on car seats or sofas... it means you don't get to enjoy the thing
itself.."I personally hate covering items like sofas, but mainly when it's one of those hardish plastics that stick to you when the room/weather is hot. If it's just a sheet or something in cotton, then it's fine. I still think a laptop is different since I will be bringing it with me to school nearly every day. The white one is especially likely to get dirty. Anyway, I'm covering the wrist areas and keyboard for now just to avoid discoloration and food pieces getting into my laptop (since I eat and drink things while working on it during lunch time or whatever at school).
I'll think about the outer cover later, although I think a sleeve is good enough.
- ribit0
actually, I wish Apple (or anyone) would offer more choices in the outer casing material... like varied shades/textures..maybe titanium, anodized colors, textured metal/plastic..maybe something that tarnishes/ages nicely like copper, wood, rocks, I dunno..

But then I HAVE to buy the next new model each time, so I have a nice new clean one a fair percentage of the time... Same with my flat.. why properly clean it, when you can just move to a new one? (Which was what I was doing when I was being sent on lots of assignments with my previous employer)...
