Thinking of driving LA – NYC next year with my lady and some friends. Any good ideas of routes or places to stop by?

That sounds absolutely awful.
Why do people enjoy driving, haha?

oooooo! i've done this a few times. and highly recommend. best way so far, started in LA, drove to Yosemite, camped for a few days...then drove through death valley (awesome, but drive at night (we didnt and almost passed out))...the night sky is amazing in these parts... then drove through Utah (which is my ultimate favorite state to drive through), checked out Bryce Canyon and stayed/hiked at Zion national park (incredible places)...drove to colorado and hung out for a few days, hiked and wandered a lot...driving through kansas is a trip, super flat and lots of farms...then the rest is kinda boring, except it was during the cicada season and those monsters were everywhere... PA is pretty, hilly and lots of farms as well..then it gets a bit depressiing in NJ (traffic, pollution and reality sinks in)... mmm. i miss the west coast. enjoy the trip!

once you pass the continental divide (going west to east) i'd recommend working your way north. i'd rather drive through kansas than texas anyday...and once you get past kansas the scenery is generally prettier all the way to NYC than it would be if you were to take a more central or southern route.

(Jun 25 07, 08:58)driving is great fun, in a proper car with like a gear stick and on roads that have corners and stuff.

I don't like being in a car for any longer than 45 minutes. Seeing some of those things out west is cool, but the lack of anything in the midwest to see makes this idea sound not so good, plus gas is like $3 a gallon averaged nationwide.

I am so lazy I am flying from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia on Friday ... again, haha.

i drove from d.c. to denver last year, taking the northern stretch and stopping in chicago.
Chicago was wonderful!!
But take my advice -- DON'T TAKE THIS ROUTE!!With the exception of Chicago you will be driving the exact same corn field road from ohio to colorado with the sun cooking you the entire time.
Go South of D.C. and drive the scenic route!!

you can't miss this gem if you get through Iowa:

in the area that is NE Iowa, SE Minnesota, and SW Wisconsin is VERY beautiful.
Chicago is nasty, traffic-wise during rush hour, and bad the rest of the time. As per the west, driving up to Yosemite, through DV and UT sounds just gorgeous. Hopefully you have a camera with plenty of pictures at your disposal, it is a trip you don't wanna miss.
Also, read Kerouac's On the Road and Tom Wolfe's Electric Koolaid Acid Test if your feeling thrifty.

I like road trips, but only when I don't have to drive much.
The broken-down-car experience in an abandoned area sounds good in theory (maybe I'm a freak), but is probably annoying when it actually happens.
