Ndakasi, a mountain gorilla who was orphaned, rescued, and later gained viral fame, died last month. She was 14. News of Ndakasi's death was announced by the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where she lived.
Ndakasi died in the arms of her handler Andre Bauma, the same man who saved her as an orphaned baby when she was 2 months old. According to CBS News, Bauma said it was a 'privilege to support and care for such a loving creature.'
A photo of Ndakasi laying in Bauma's arms shortly before she died has gone viral this week. Interestingly, it is not the first time she became an overnight internet star. In 2019, a photo of Ndakasi and another female gorilla photobombing a caretaker was also widely shared across social media.
