Is there really that much of a difference than just your standard DVD? I mean, a DVD looks pretty fantastic on my LCD...unless they're in f'ing 3D or if they include some form of smell-o-vision I think I'll hold out for a while.

Doesn't matter - HD will be piped through or cpus soon enough. hard media is going away

    • not for backups.mrdobolina
    • dobs, you dont use hard drives for backups yet?Meeklo
    • huh?mrdobolina
    • hard drives are still "hard media"mrdobolina
    • of course I do, but I still burn dvd's as other backups. redundancy.mrdobolina
    • of course they are, did you ever doubted about it? I was asking cause I saw posted earlier about being interested on BR for backupsMeeklo
    • BR for backups.
Honestly I haven't burned a backup on a dvd in a year, HD are so cheap these days

      Meeklo
    • I burn dvd's all the time.mrdobolina
    • oh yea?
are you burning one right now?

      Meeklo
    • get it?Meeklo
    • I am burning that porn you starred in on one right now.mrdobolina

I was young and I needed the money.

if you have a 1080p TV, Blu-Ray is awesome. but i must say it depends on the movie. I was thinking it had to do with the age of the film but I watched Halloween on Blu-Ray and it was like watching a NEW movie. unbelievable.

  • Ramanisky20

yeah I saw Blu-ray of Pirates of the Caribbean at Circuit City ... and it took me a second to comprehend how clear the picture was
I was blown away by the picture quality

I would like to see Blu-ray and HD DVD played right next to each other

    • see what I mean? pirates of the caribean on BR. How about a good movie?Meeklo
  • Milan0

I doubt you'll be able to notice any difference between a Blu-ray and HD DVD movie. I'm still fine with normal DVD quality and won't be buying any HD shit anytime soon.

    • most def ... im waiting this one out .... I've already wasted so much money on reg dvdsRamanisky2
    • Me too. But I have been planning to sell them all on eBay for like ... two years. I think I need to strike now.flavorful
    • except for maybe the boxsets of like seinfeld and always sunny in philly & the wireRamanisky2
    • sounds like someone who hasn't tasted HD :)Mojo
  • Meeklo0

yeah quality is better, but sometime that hurts the movie, specially when CGI is being used, quality got so good that you can now tell a lot easier. the opposite is for documentary works, planet earth looks great.

    • true! movies with bad CGI, high def = FAILMojo

I don't even know why you bother talking.

What has the porn industry gone with? That holds some weight, no?

    • They chose HD-DVD... but as mentioned, who cares when you get porn through the interweb. There was no web in VHS/Betamax days.ETM
  • Meeklo0

Why do people keep saying that about the porn industry?
I really doubt that "Back door sluts 9" will out sale any non porn blockbuster. ever.

You see a movie star and they have huge mansions and most of them look healthy.

Take a look at a pornstar, they all look skinny as hell, probably because they been snorting ritalin all year long, suckin d*ck to pay rent.

    • because the porn industry was the decider in VHS vs BETAstupidresponse
    • but wasn't that like 25 years ago?
      Lets compare sales today.
      Meeklo
    • Billions and billions of dollars. Oh they have a stake in it allright.harlequino
    • And it's not the pornstars, it's the distribution companies and holding companies.harlequino
    • yeah, they're pretty big.Jaline
    • In ... more ways than one?

      Ah thank you.
      flavorful
    • no doubt they are pretty big, butthey are just a small % when compared to film studios, yes?Meeklo

    Here's a summary:

Despite the consumer wishes, where 43% of mainstream HDTV consumers preferred HD DVD compared to 27% favoring Blu-Ray while around 30% being undecided (according to global research from The Diffusion Group) and obvious mass adoption possibilities like already established DVD disc replication factories, SD and HD dvd on one disc capability and cheaper price the format war ended up being decided by studios and CE companies.

It is just a matter of time now,but Warner Bros is now officially backing Blu-ray exclusively. With now over 60% of US global movie catalog market share Blu-Ray has been pronounced a winner.

After canceling an already scheduled CES press conference, Toshiba and HD DVD Group pointed out that they were extremely surprised and disappointed by Warner's decision in addition to the fact they have several contracts still active.

Universal, Paramount and Dreamworks along with Toshiba have not made any official announcements as to the next steps, but in a brief email to Bloomberg, Paramount representative pointed out that Paramount still continues to support HD DVD. Toshiba made a brief statement at CES mentioning that HD DVD has been called dead before. Universal was unable for comments at this point.

Judging by insider sources close to the whole situation and negotiations say that unconfirmed $500 million deal was reached between Sony and Warner Bros. The initial deal was meant to be between Toshiba and Warner as they've already planned to hold the press conference together with the 2 party event following at the Wynn in Las Vegas.

It has been said that Warner was going HD DVD and asked another Blu-Ray studio to follow. 20th Century Fox was the second studio and on January 4th, Fox bailed out leaving Warner with a hard choice to make. Feeling that the format war needs to end before hi-def market goes into niche, they made a 180 flip and went with Blu-Ray as a stronger ally. Warner executives have said that no money has exchanged hands but failed to comment on any incentives or subsidization costs offered mentioned in the $500 million deal.

    HD-DVD-FAIL

  • quamb0

This hd-war is a complete mess.

Who wants a player that has barely a handful of quality titles, may become obsolete at any moment and your favourite film/franchise is on the other format?

Seems dual-players are the way to go, for now anyway, as HD-DVD may be dying, but aint dead yet.

Besides, HD seems like an apathetic step, rather then a big-leap that consumers are excited about (ie VHS to DVD).

    • Dual-players FTW. This fight is annoying me. I will wait it out as well. But for now I have to worry about what format I shouldJaline

Blu-Ray win might be closer but it's still not there..

Samsung has announced they'll continue releasing HD DVD/Blu-Ray combo players. In fact their latest 5500 model is great and a lot cheaper (still expensive) but it's better at around $500

It's still not over of course..there's quite a bit of content on the HD DVD side, but if Universal or Paramount go neutral it will definitely sound the end of HD DVD theater movies.

The thing is, what people don't understand that there's no mass adoption with $400+ Blu-Ray. As soon as Warner switched, Sony increased the price on their cheapest Blu-Ray player the BDP-300 from $299 to $399. BOGOs (Buy 1 get 1 free) are not going to be available now and we will see movies go back to $30-$40 that's a given and even the CE companeis that announced new Blu-Ray players don't show any sign of lowering the price, in fact they are increasing the prices. Pioneer and Denon announced new $2000+ players, Panasonic announced new models that will cost more then their cheapest $500 Panasonic BD30 player and the only "cheap" BD player will be new $300 FUNAI Profile 1.1 Blu-Ray player.

If you thought you could jump on the HD train you will probably be waiting for a while or at least until 2009 with the prices we are seeing.

Despite the fact that HD DVD can indeed lose this one, Blu-Ray certainly has almost zero chance to replace DVD. With Blu-Ray winning on corporate levels where consumers have not decided but backdoor deals, HDM (hi-def market) is poised to be niche.

Judging by Samsung executive and his recent comments that digital distribution will definitely replace standard definition content, HD DVD remaining still in the cheap PC market with the Chinese support (something that Blu-Ray stays away from because they can't afford $50 players anymore) not all is dark for HD fans.

New technology called xStreamHD will start offering beginning next year FULL 1080p, 7.1 DTS-MA HD service that will reach every home with no restrictions of slower cable connections.

It uses sattelite to stream 80mbps streams to customer's house allowing uncompromising quality. The initial price should be around $300 for a set-top and still unknown monthly Netflix like service (some people are speculating that it might be between $25-$50) with unlimited viewing and three models for enjoying movies (keep em, rent them and another one).

    http://www.xstreamhd.com/

Don't worry about your HD DVD collection though. Keep your player, feel free to continue buying HD DVD movies, as if Universal and Paramount decide to continue fighting next to Toshiba and Microsoft, Blu-Ray will still miss a lot of good movies that are scheduled for this year. Of course if that moment approaches where you might not have any more HD DVD support you can always rip movies like I do and store them on your media center PC or something.

Just some of the movies HD DVD still has, of course this is considering that no studio on their side goes neutral. It's enough for these movies to become neutral and HD DVD is definitely done as far as big Hollywood movies are concerned.

Who the fuck can trumpet an optical disc that holds less data than another? Really if HD DVD won the whole shooting match, in 8 years what would we get, Blu-Ray dual layer? Why should anyone shoot so low? Seems kinda senseless to salute the cheap optical disc that holds less data than the other cheap optical disc that holds more data. It's all capacity, they both play the same formats.

    • people who purchased an HD-DVD player.joyride
    • HD-DVDs hold less, but are easier to make, allow hybrid discs with SD sides and are more durable as the data layer is better protected. It also has more interactive features. I would have bet on them until the WB news.ETM
  • mrdobolina0

And I knoiw what everyone is saying about other sony formats like the memory stick and the minidisc but this thing fits a 5 inch drive, its different.

  • Boz0

    @mrdobolina

Okay, the question to you question would be:

Who the fuck can trumpet optical disc at all, when we have solid drives, hard drives, wireless usb and other alternate ways and devices to store tens of times more content that's actually rewritable and faster to access?

    • would be great if they were in this race. but this is one is about optical discs.mrdobolina
