PS or AI for web design?

What application do you prefer for creating web site mock-ups and web ready graphics (for html/css sites)?
Is there any benefit to using Illustrator? A lot of print designers I've worked with provide their files in .ai format. Personally, I like Photoshop because you can keep everything contained in one file without having to worry about linked images. That, and selecting items with the copy merged function is sweet.

I prefer Photoshop, but mostly because I'm used to it and it's easy to apply my bad habits quickly.

PS all the way. I can't somehow comprehend how someone would do it in Illy. I tried it once like last year for a proposal and I was slow and felt completely imprecise. I like having control over each and every pixel, transparencies, masks, gradients, etc...

- *sarcasm* gee, you are a geniousVectorMasked
- I can't understand how someone working in a creative field could think there is only one way to do thingsMeeklo
- it's spelled "genius" you fucking clownstupidresponse
- there IS only one way to mock up for a pixel based raster environment though, and its PS.kelpie

Yeah, that's exactly how I feel. I kind of hate illustrator.

Photoshop. Hands down. Really, it's totally feasible in either, and I know people who use Illo, but it's beyond me why you would choose to use it, unless you're totally proficient in it and not in Photoshop - otherwise, why use a vector based tool to create pixel based designs? It can also depend on the site being designed, the style, your style etc etc. But overall, as a rule, Photoshop all the way.
Although if I'm honest, it's not what either were originally desinged for, obviously. We should all be using Fireworks.
But I hate Fireworks :)

My feeling is that in CS3, an Illustrator file will move into Flash better. So, if your final site is to be in Flash, use Illustrator.
But, if the project is for html/css, Photoshop might well be better.

I use Illustrator as my main program when developing site. Though some times I use PS for certain elements, but those image files move right into Illustrator then off onto the code.

Object > Path > Split to grid
is very useful for putting together grid systems in illustrator quickly...
(if you're that way inclined...)- hey that's cool, never noticed that beforestupidresponse

illustrator. single pixel grid and snap

I find I use both simultaneously when mocking up a site. No real preference over the other.

PS shape layers destroys AI for web and UI design.

both. on anything I do. print, web, animation, whatever.

Fireworks is the best software to compose web layouts (best bitmap/vector handling ratio) and maximize your workflow. If you don't like it just because it doesn't quite meet the idea of a proficient designer and its need for a philosophical artistic status (which is as good as brambles, btw) then you're better off knitting emblems in a sock with a ball-pen by the stove or trying to fish small sardines with a cold-war war-head.

Sorry, but Fireworks as a solution is a non-starter since it didn't come with the CS3 Suite we paid a week's billings for!

Illustrator, it's more precise, easier to change borders, line weights, etc. Can change the color of a complete scheme in a few minutes.
Our sites are mostly Flash, though.
FYI - I rarely use linked images, typically they get embedded to keep everything in one place.

I think photoshop is best for the final composition. But I always use illustrator elements in my designs.. illustrator does some fonky shit photoshop couldn't poke with a mallet.

i use illustrator to layout everything perfect and on the pixel (to get my objects in line)... then copy and paste those objects into PS (as smart objects - sometimes w/extended detail)... and then 'polish' everything in PS.
start in illy - finish in PS... :)

Now the real question is.
Does anyone ACTUALLY use inDesign for creating Websites?
If not why did Adobe include this kind of functionality in inDesign?
- hah.
maybe if you want to publish your mag/book online.akrokdesign - Good Point.univers

I use PS but AI is running along.
