I would set the left hand column to be a repeating background image.
body {
background-image: url(file:/filepath);
background-repeat: repeat-y;
background-position: left top;
}And put the right hand content into a scrollble div.
html {
height:100%;
overflow:hidden;
}
div.contentscroller {
position:relative;
width:100%;
height:100%;
overflow:scroll;
float:left;
margin-left:[size of left hand column]
}
That should work I think.

Agreed, and there are various options to deal with the right side as a DIV that takes up 100% of the browser height coupled with overflow.

you could fake the col bg with a background image on the body. as mentioned above, the fixed position can be achieved with position:fixed. have fun tinkering!

i am not sure that is possible with css. javascript can do it fine but the navigation wont look as smooth as it would with frames. another option is to use a scrolling div for the content part.
then again, i suck at css.

The big problem with fixing everything to the left is that that area is quite tall, a lot of that will fall below the fold and disappear forever on a lot of people's monitors.

Any of you CSS superstars in here help me out? I want everything on the left to stay fixed, and just the images and text on the right to scroll up and down. Also want the brown bg on the left to run to the bottom of the browser window no matter how big the resolution, if you get me.
Easily done in frames, yes, but I'm much more interested in understanding how to achieve this properly using CSS.
Many thanks!
