23kon - got any pics from that Ricoh you can share?
Preferably at the highest res...

i got the Ricoh GX100 a couple of months ago after swethering over the Leica's / Sigma etc etc and the one i settled on was the GX
Never been so impressed with a digital camera!
I'd reccomend either waiting a month or so until the GX200 comes out and get that, or get a GX100 when the prices come down ;)
- It is great!JamesBoynton
- i would be curious about the noise??.. i heard they were noisy.. i go the g9 insteadloaf

moth, just changed permissions on flickr so you can see them at their largest.
normally i take them down to 1200x900 but there might be some up there at original size

I'm wondering if I should go with a full DSLR instead to have more of a traditionnal manual camera feel (and not just buttons to play with the speed, depth of field, etc.). The only drawback is that its not as compact as a point&shoot. Wich is kind of a big selling point for me.

the likes of the GX100 has all the controls a dslr has and a fraction of the size.
the only reason for going for a dslr would be because the sensor size is a lot bigger. but the sheer size of dslr's make me not want one.
the gx100 can fit in a pocket and is not even noticed if its in a bag too. i was actually thinkin about this yesterday as i put it in my bag about to leave work, its so small.
- + it looks fantastic... just dont bother with the digi view finder IMO.JamesBoynton
- I mean the bit you can take off... not sure what its called.JamesBoynton
- yeah viewfinder isnt necessary23kon

23kon, do you have any sample pics you can show me?

I'd rather have canon.

Go with the Canon G9. I have one as a point and shoot, when I don't feel like dragging the DSLR bag around. Its a fantastic camera.

Been reading up about the launch of the Ricoh GX200
It seems that Ricoh have stupidly went down the same Noise Reduction route for jpegs as they did when they introduced the GRDII after the GRD. Lots of photographers who swore by their GRD refused to get the new version as ricoh used a NR that seemed to smear the jpeg and didnt use the same 'grain' effect that the original GRD used for NR.
The GX100 doesnt have quite the same 'grain' effect as the GRD but it is evident (esp when shooting high iso b&w). But the GX100 definitely doesnt use the same smearing as the GRDII.
It seems that the GX200 DOES use the same kind of NR as the GRDII's.
This is evident on the image examples for JPEGS that Ricoh shows on their site.
NOTE : .... if you are buying this camera to just shoot RAW then this smearing doesnt apply - its jpegs only.
I was quite gutted to read this about the new GX200 :(
Maybe i'll wait and see what peoples images are like when they start getting sold and the results posted on the likes of flickr.

I heard there was a hack for those Canon P&S to include RAW capture among others. I don't know if it's only for A series cameras or not.

i own the leica, and friends who own the ricoh, the cannon one, and the lumix panasonic, which is the same one as the leica but 300 dollars cheaper and without the leica logo, anyways, leica is the best, my friend had a leica, and lost it and bought the cannon, and another friend got the ricoh after owning a leica, and my girfriend owns the lumix, they all agree that leica is better.
these is my flickr, these were with the leica, you wont regret owning one, the only little problem i find is that it isnt very friendly in lowlight but i dont know much about cameras, maybe they are all like that.

not to sound cheeky or anything here surfito, but the reason that i and maybe others like the Ricoh are the technical aspects and what the camera offers.
I'm going to presume that your girlfriend or your friends are not serious photographers and just like taking good photos. By that i mean that they and maybe yourself (not knowing much about cameras) judge a camera on maybe its picture quality, usability and 'how it feels to hold' rather than the more advanced features of the cameras that they offer.Granted the Leica, Cannon etc are all good cameras and were in my shortlist when i was spending weeks pixelpeeping peoples flickr photos and researching each camera. Until i finally decided it was the Ricoh that offered me everything i needed and wanted from a camera.
- super wide angle lens
- zoom
- jpeg & raw
- the "MY Settings"
- Hotshoe
- ability to take other lenses
- can take AA Battery as well as the standard lithium supplied
- image quality and 'grain' type noise reduction over jpeg spearing

i have the d-lux 3. it's a pretty decent camera....
my cleaning lady broke my D80 (my fault for leaving it out with the sb800 still attached)....so i've been a little disappointed with the amount of noise with the leica compared to the nikon, but it's a different class of camera.....i think for a point and shoot it is pretty amazing....plus great to shoot raw and much smaller than the G9 (which does not even fit in your pocket).
it is going to do me fine until canon finally releases the new 5D or equivalent..... anybody know anything about this release?
- surfito0
they are photographers and very good, i havent tried the ricoh but from a website i saw once, i know its pretty good and is better than leica on low light.
but check this thing out, i want it. its like a ghost camera.
