while riding my bike about 2 hours ago. my left hip is bruised, my left elbow is bloodied, and my right leg is still shaking, but luckily i was wearing a helmet. i was in a bike lane and just as i was passing by this grey suv, the door opened and my handlebar hooked right into it, knocking me off my bike and into the right lane of traffic. the guy in the car was completely unapologetic and even blamed me for the accident and started bitching about his door. it was then that i truly suprised myself, by quelling a rage so fierce that the only satisfaction i could find in that moment would have been to punch him in the face and to drink the blood of the puppy barking against the window in the back seat of his car. i am now grateful for this , especially becuase the puppy was innocent, and rather cute.
it was raining, so we went into a nearby store. after calmly arguing that he was at fault for not checking his mirror before getting out, especially because he was parked next to a bike lane, i asked for his drivers license. he told me he didn't have it with him, and reluctantly gave me his first name and his cell number. i was too nonplussed by the reality of what had just happened to me to realize i could have responded that i would call the cops and report him for both the accident and driving without a license. he then walked away muttering obscenities. afterward, i got the fuckers license plate number just in case. i took my bike to a nearby bikeshop and due to a bent frame, there are at least $300 in damages.
should i file a police report? please tell me he is going to be liable for the damages my bike sustained.

damn, sorry to hear about this. where do you live?
it's definitely his fault -- what an a&&hole. and of course it was an SUV. i would definiltey file a police report, especially since so much damage was done to your bike.

Definitely call the police on his ass.

You won a door prize eh?
Congrats.
- marchelo0
you HAVE to file a report, or youll regret it.
- Samush0
its likely you won't be able to claim your expenses back without reporting it to the police and getting an incident number. thats how we roll in the UK anyway.

call the cops, file a report, and yes he is liable for damages to you and your bike. One word for this man > c*nt.
Glad that you're not too hurt!

It's sad, a guy in Toronto was killed month or so ago when a car door opened on him, as he was cycling by. He went flying off his bike and got plowed over by the Truck. The police deemed it an accident, and the woman who opened the door on him was fined like $100.
- that's fucked up, i feel really lucky nowarmsbottomer
- Ya you gotta be careful out there.canuck

i'll definitley get the police involved now, i can only hope they make him pay for it.

A guy I knew at from school died this summer when someone opened a door in front of him, except he was thrown into traffic and killed on contact from some kind of spinal injury... It's amazing how careless people can be so close to traffic (all it takes is a glance in two mirrors...)
- And yes, you should file a police report. Although since you didn't call the police on the spot, he may not be liable for damages.ismith

This is precisely the reasons you should carry a hand gun. See 'kid dies in a show' thread for a tutorial.
- i'm afraid if i do i might eventually use itarmsbottomer

I commute on a bike and always feel something like that might happen. it sucks that some drivers have no respect to the cyclists. Most of the bike lanes in NYC is blocked by double parked cars and delivery trucks while crazy cab drivers are constantly cutting me off on the bike lanes. i really wish the city has more euro style street system.
- i go to school in nyc, but haven't taken my bike there yet. i was thinking about doing it this semester, but now i'm having second thoughtsarmsbottomer

- i will. and i'll definitely mention it. ii'm hoping that will get me extra brownie pointsarmsbottomer

Do you guys have a bell law in your cities? Apparently it's a $114 fine if you don't have one on your bike in Toronto. I guess it makes sense to have one, but I just don't think they would do much.
- i doubt it. i should move to canada, that law rocksarmsbottomer
