ABSOLUTELY file a report
- robotron3k0
you ARE covered by insurance and YOU should have not left the scene without a police and ambulance report. anytime someone is hurt the police need to be called.
- or rather, his insurance will cover you. and you should have at least slap the shit out of him if you were going to leave.robotron3k

I don't understand how people can first off not check the bike lanes before they get out and second, if that ever did happen be rude to the person they just doored. Contact the police for sure.

I know that you are always responsible for opening your door into traffic. I took a old ladies door off in a parking lot when she opened it in front of my truck. And to my surprise, after contacting the police, it was her responsibility. So I say file a report.

File a report with the cops. You nearly died and he was pissed at a broken car door. Show no mercy.
- Redmond0
Yeah what Robotron 3k said, you had to notify them right away. Hopefully that won't happen again anyhow!

People like this simply will not acknowledge, let alone change, the error of their ways unless they are made to.
I hope you heal up okay. Get checked out, and good.

i just did a reverse lookup on the phone number the guy gave me and it doesn't match his given name. what a surprise. i'm so glad i got his license plate number. tomorrow i'm going straight to the police, and will mention this to them as well.

Find out where he lives and throw a damned molotov through his front window and have some chicken-fried dog for dinner.

yeah, i'd try to call and let him know you are very sore and you've realized your bike is damaged so you'll be filing a police report.. if it's his number.
i've had too many close calls, which is why i take full lanes when there are cars parked close to the edge. people get pissy and honk and yell shit, but whatever, it doesn't bother me, i just turn around and smile at them. if they try to get funny on me, i have my new york chain and padlock around my waist that makes a nice weapon with which to remove their side mirror. that generally shuts them up. i'll probably get shot for it one day though.
- that sounds like solid advice. i just have to make sure my ulock is intimidating enougharmsbottomer
- hey if he's got insurance or license "issues" he might even offer cash to not go to police!stupidresponse

man, I feel sorry for you, but it's not the responsibility of a driver to check for cyclists. Not at all. I've researched it before after some dumb girl that used to date a friend went absolute batshit on myspace after her new boyfriend was doored. I found (and it might just be in Illinois) that it is 100% the responsibility of the cyclist to ride cautiously and avoid opening doors.
I'm not sure about bike lanes and any special rules about that, but really, I think the driver has no responsibility. I feel bad for what happened to you, truly, and I know the impulse is to feel that it's his fault, but do some research. Look up "cyclists code of conduct" or "cyclist rules of the road" and I bet you'll find something similar to what I'm talking about.

damn, sorry to hear about this. where do you live?
it's definitely his fault -- what an a&&hole. and of course it was an SUV. i would definiltey file a police report, especially since so much damage was done to your bike.

Definitely call the police on his ass.

You won a door prize eh?
Congrats.
- marchelo0
you HAVE to file a report, or youll regret it.

its likely you won't be able to claim your expenses back without reporting it to the police and getting an incident number. thats how we roll in the UK anyway.
