"Michael Phelps may be the most astounding athlete of the Beijing Olympics.
Natalie du Toit is the most inspirational.
Phelps’ eight gold medals and seven world records left you in awe.
Du Toit’s effort in the open water swimming marathon left you in tears.
Phelps set his record with a body custom-made for swimming. Du Toit swam 6.2 miles with one leg.
Du Toit became the first female amputee to compete in the Olympics. She finished 16th in the brand new Olympic event, crossing the line in two hours, 49.9 seconds after swimming around the lake at the Shunyi Park venue used by rowers and kayakers."

Read this.
It's talking about the hard training life that the Chinese athletes got.http://www.usatoday.com/sports/o…
"Each year they can only go home once, or maximum twice, for one or two days at a time"
- VectorMasked0
Yeah... everybody knows that. That's the only thing people can do to reach success and economic safety, unless your parents are rich.
Just watched on CBC a 1-hour program on the training and lives of the Chinese kids... and they don't seem very excited. They suffer with tons of training, but they never give up because they feel they owe their parents and teachers everything for being there for them.
The kids from a particular school... all come from tiny towns in the most rural areas of China and are sent to Beijing by their parents coz they know they can't give their kids much... and the parents only got to see their kids like once every 3 or 4 years, after the school paid for the parent's bus tickets.pretty sad stuff, but as the same time there's some good inspiring things going on with all that.
- It does make a lot of them successful though, which makes you wonder...Jaline
- Of course... 999 out of 1000 fail miserably and end up working at McD.VectorMasked
- It's amazing what da body does when it has been trained 2 do da exact same movement over n over again. It becomes so naturalVectorMasked

So softball will be taken out next time because the winner (U.S.A.) is too predictable. Funny, as they lost to Japan this time. It makes me wonder though...Womens Hockey can be taken out too since Canada always wins. But I think it's more of a historical thing, and they probably take skill level and how many people actually challenge the U.S.A. into consideration.

Some people are arguing that if you have softball, generally dominated by the Western hemisphere, then you must have cricket to be fair. And I doubt the Olympic committee wants to add a bunch of sports to the roster all the time (although cricket may be worth it, if you think about it).
