Spicer has just said there had "never" been SCOTUS nomination made as late in a presidential term as Merrick Garland. That is an outright lie.

Setting aside the point that the timing issue is a moronic excuse, Merrick Garland was nominated on March 16th of Obama's last year.

On June 26th of his last year in office, LBJ nominated Abe Fortas to be the new Chief Justice and Homer Thornberry to replace Fortas.

Reagan nominated Anthony Kennedy on 11/30/87, within a year of the 1988 presidential election, and he was confirmed on 2/3/88

Eisenhower appointed William Brennan to the court -- by a recess appointment! -- just weeks before the 1956 presidential election.

FDR nominated Frank Murphy to the Supreme Court in an election year, on January 4, 1940, and he was confirmed just two weeks later.

Herbert Hoover nominated Benjamin Cardozo to the Supreme Court in an election year, on Feb. 15, 1932. He was confirmed nine days later.

Woodrow Wilson nominated John Clarke to the Supreme Court in an election year, on July 14, 1916. He was confirmed ten days later.

Woodrow Wilson also nominated Louis Brandeis to the Supreme Court earlier that same election year, on Jan. 28, 1916. Confirmed in June.

William Howard Taft nominated Mahlon Pitney to the Supreme Court in an election year, on February 19, 1912. Confirmed the next month.

Benjamin Harrison nominated George Shiras Jr. to the Supreme Court in an election year, on July 19, 1882. Confirmed a week later.

Shall we keep fucking going Spicer...you daft lying sack of shit?

Just watched some interesting footage of Sally Yates being grilled at her confirmation hearing. Will she for example, put the law before any stupid actions that the president might wish to take...to which she said that she absolutely would. The law comes first.

The person asking the question...Jeff Sessions.

So is this really a thing, or just a really tiny fringe thing being exaggerated by the media?

California's population makes up almost 20% of the entire US.

Yet their 55 electoral votes out of the total 538 is only 10%.

Their 55 votes needs to be more like 100. The EC was put in place during a time when CA didnt have such a large population gap over all of the other states, and it has never been updated since.

The same is true for NY. The population has grown much faster than most other states, yet their EC vote total has never been updated to reflect this. So it gets easy to understand why a state like CA feels like their votes dont matter as much as they should, because they actually dont.

The EC system is fine, its just out of date. Trump said this himself in 2012 when he tweeted out that it was a "disaster for democracy". Because RIGHT NOW it is. But he said that before he knew it would become the only reason he would win. There is a BIG problem in this country when trump only gets 20% of the population to vote for him, yet still wins. This is not right no matter how you spin it. So good for Cali trying to break off. It likely wont happen, but this will unsettle both sides of the isle in Washington if it gets enough attention, and it looks like it is.

    • It's a funny old thing, though. A few years ago, this would be totally fringe. But with social media, it has the potential to be a big enough thing to rattle ..Continuity
    • ... some nerves.Continuity
  • CygnusZero41

This is why it makes zero sense when you see trump supporter being like, "omg!!!! trump won like 3000 counties!" Yeah, except that the majority of them have like 50 people in them lol.

So a county with 50 people in it has as much of a say in an election as los angeles, which has 4 million. Seems legit. I dont care how you spin it, the EC is fine, it just needs to be updated to properly and FAIRLY reflect where the population has grown in this country.

    • Totally - amazed it hasn't been updated - surely there are people pushing for that? I have no idea (in UK).fadein11
    • The GOP would never let it happen in the states where they hold office, and re-districting is every ten years, last time in 2010.BuddhaHat
    • were the EC votes and district lines drawn more fairly, the GOP's power at state and federal level would be diminished. You know, 'cos of reality.BuddhaHat
    • It needs to be updated. But it exists so that small parts of the country aren't forgotten about. Trump came in there and sold them snake oil.err

The Jacksonian Revolt - American Populism and the Liberal Order

The whole thing is an interesting read, but here's an excerpt:

    IDENTITY POLITICS BITE BACK
"The most powerful driver of Jacksonian political engagement in domestic politics, similarly, is the perception that Jacksonians are being attacked by internal enemies, such as an elite cabal or immigrants from different backgrounds. Jacksonians worry about the U.S. government being taken over by malevolent forces bent on transforming the United States’ essential character. They are not obsessed with corruption, seeing it as an ineradicable part of politics. But they care deeply about what they see as perversion—when politicians try to use the government to oppress the people rather than protect them. And that is what many Jacksonians came to feel was happening in recent years, with powerful forces in the American elite, including the political establishments of both major parties, in cahoots against them."

    • From my article linked above: Most Jacksonians are not foreign policy experts and do not ever expect to become experts.BuddhaHat
    • For them, leadership is necessarily a matter of trust. If they believe in a leader or a political movement, they are prepared to accept policies that seemBuddhaHat

I've been getting into discussions with a few people who conflate Trump's "immigration ban" with a need to stop illegal immigration. Seen a few people post a cheap meme showing a statement made by Bill Clinton about controlling illegal immigration, with words also used by Trump, as a defense of what Trump did on Friday. A "Clinton did it too!" approach.

OK... let's break this down for a second. Illegal immigration is not the same thing as arriving in this country with a green card, a visa, or as part of a refugee resettlement program with a path to legal citizenship. Right? So how can anyone conflate an actual need to stop illegal immigration with just shutting people from specific countries out of LEGAL entry via the options listed above?

Is it not crazy to anyone else that people confuse the two? I simply cannot see how Trump's actions can be misconstrued as an attempt to stop illegal immigration.

    • Ooops, I'm a dumbass, see my comments attached to my own post above, LOL. *slap*BuddhaHat
    • don't forget, Trump is only doing this for 90 days ... what the FUCK is that about? So, we're gonna stop immigration for 3 months and ... what?monospaced
    • I just had this conversation last night, if it could be called a conversation. It was like talking to a brick wall. "... but, but Illegal Immigrants..."kona
    • No amount of logic helped him to see the difference. In the end I told him we'd have to agree to disagree and he said "Well you're WRONG" and stormed offkona
    • What Trump did shouldn't even have the word "immigration" associated with it, because entering via those means isn't even immigrating.mg33

Big day tomorrow, our overlord will visit our little island of happiness, to talk with our leaders about the future of the EU and other outdated things like civil rights, freedom and democracy. Give us some money to build a new nuclear reactor, and help our current leaders to win the next election.

I'm sad that they have to travel around the whole city from the airport to get into the parlament, but if they don't i'm sure about that the liberal-capitalist protesters (sponsored by soros and his friends) will do something nasty!
