Corruption, Not Russia, Is Trump’s Greatest Political Liability
- yuekit0
Trump's EPA chief's corruption is balanced out (in the eyes of Republicans) by the fact that he has been successful in destroying environmental laws.

Speaking of the EPA and Pruitt, I want someone, anyone, to explain to me what is gained by lowering emission standards for cars in the US, when every single car manufacture in the US now builds engines, emission systems, etc. into every single car they manufacture, which required new systems, machines, process, etc. that they certainly wouldn't pull back from and remove from car-making.
US auto makers to my knowledge do not want to change the standards and don't agree with Pruitt's BS.
Secondly, most major developed countries around the world have higher emission standards than we do. Obviously auto exports are a big part of the American economy, and a part that the government would always want to be growing. If they get rid of the emissions standards, we couldn't export those cars, presumably.
So why the F would this even be a thing? Who exactly does it benefit?
- Good points. It's so dumb. Maybe so carmakers will not have to pump more $ into R&D for US products? Mostly pickups.aslip
- Aye, I've wondered about exports myself, somewhere here. Christ, what if California maintains higher standards? Not even inter-state sales? Daftdetritus
- aslip, but it's like, as far as I know, that work is done. They did the work to increase standards. If not I'd love to know more about it.mg33
- Plus, why would auto manuf undo these changes when in 2.5 years there is likely to be a different administration who would switch it back?mathinc

Too big for a comment...
"Weakening fuel economy and emissions standards would undermine the global competitiveness of the U.S. auto industry at a time when the rest of the world is moving in the opposite direction in response to energy security concerns, consumer preferences, and climate regulation. Having worked hard to establish global leadership in fuel efficiency and emissions-control technology, why would America want to throw all its progress into reverse?"
--
Here are some statements pulled from throughout the article:- weakened standards could cause losses of $3.3 billion a year between 2022 and 2025 due to lost sales of fuel-efficient technologies.
- It is clear to us that rolling back fuel-efficiency and emissions targets would make zero sense economically for anyone but oil companies.
- In fact, it would set back American car companies and those working for them because the global automotive market is moving the opposite direction, away from gas guzzlers and toward cleaner, more efficient cars and associated technology.
- strong miles-per-gallon standards provide market certainty, spur innovation, and make U.S. auto manufacturers and suppliers more competitive.
- Recently, groups representing America’s auto parts suppliers joined advanced materials manufacturers and emissions control technology companies in stating that “it is in the nation’s best interests to continue leading the development and manufacture of the cleanest and most efficient vehicles in the world.”
- Stronger standards also help the broader economy; fuel cost savings lead to increased consumer spending in other areas that create local jobs and boost American economic growth.
- An analysis by Synapse Energy Economics, Inc. estimates that more than 100,000 jobs will be created and U.S. GDP will increase by more than $13 billion by the time the standards are fully implemented.
- In addition to improving national economic stability, investing in advanced energy technologies improves our standing in the global economy.
- Strong national fuel economy and emissions standards spur innovation and open the door to tremendous economic opportunities. They represent an investment in technological and economic leadership. Weakening them would be a bad deal for investors, workers, car owners, and businesses—and for the American economy itself.

Teacher: I make more money mowing lawns

- Amazing, I never knew that was the case in the US. Teachers also get the "work half the year" over here but perhaps more appreciated after all.fadein11
- Wow, seriously mind is blown that teaching is not considered a profession to solely live off. Vital. Difficult.fadein11

- Differs greatly state to state and education level. Starting salary ~$37k and it increases like every 10 years with higher bumps based on edu.whatthefunk

USA is the new Rome. Trump is the narcissistic emperor who wants to be loved by everyone and fails. 20 trillion+ in debt, military industrial complex spending out of control.
I have a feeling that something is about to happen now that he appointed Neo-Con war monger John Bolton.
Anyone think WW3 coming?

Watch: House Republicans address media after Speaker Paul Ryan announces retirement
Asshole. He fucks up the entire financial system, then skates off to go lift weights. I'd have rather seen him get beaten.
On the other hand this means the main challenger in the Republican primaries is an actual Nazi. Good times.

Paul Ryan's decision to wait until January to retire includes an under-the-radar benefit
In Ryan's case, retiring after October means he would have a three-year stretch earning the speaker's salary of$223,500. If Ryan failed to hit those three years by retiring immediately, his average would be reduced since he would have served less than three years at the speaker's salary and some of the high-3 at the normal member's salary of $174,000.
