WOW what a MOVE by McCain... behind in the polls, then he does this...

"MCCAIN SUSPENDS CAMPAIGN TO FOCUS ON ECONOMY; WANTS DEBATE DELAY
    Wed Sept 24 2008 14:58:02 ET

MCCAIN: America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.

Last Friday, I laid out my proposal and I have since discussed my priorities and concerns with the bill the Administration has put forward. Senator Obama has expressed his priorities and concerns. This morning, I met with a group of economic advisers to talk about the proposal on the table and the steps that we should take going forward.I have also spoken with members of Congress to hear their perspective.

It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration' proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time.

Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me.

I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.

We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved.I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night's debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.

I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so.

Following September 11th, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. We must show that kind of patriotism now. Americans across our country lament the fact that partisan divisions in Washington have prevented us from addressing our national challenges. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country."

WTF is going on? I just started reading this. Are you kidding me? What a hand played by McCain to look like he actually cares, and wants to make Obama look so bad if he doesn't agree.

This is really quite amazing. I thought I'd seen it all. I don't agree or disagree fully yet on whether or not it's a good idea for both of them to do this, but you KNOW this is just a game being played by McCain to try and look like he's got this front-of-mind.

  • robotron3k0

I'm trying to figure out WHY McCains vote has so much weight on this??? does anyone know??

  • BonSeff0

McCain just wants to get his boys PAID

  • kona0

McCain just showed his hand (in the above statement). Obama will carefully consider all options and show he's holding pocket aces.

Obama will come back with a very calculated response that will take all the wind out of McCains sails.

  • TheBlueOne0

So, he can't do two things at once then?

    • not when he's behind in the polls and he's got to get his boyz paid.robotron3k

    really interesting - read

Mccain suspending campaign, calls for Obama to do the same

  • mg330

I'm really in shock at this. Not sure what else to say. I love when people running for president get to pretend they are already president and that their single vote or opinion is what's going to change everything.

NEITHER ONE OF THEM ARE PRESIDENT YET!

    • Yea, let the current administration deal with this... oh wait.. that's a bad idea too. You're screwed America :(ETM
  • TheBlueOne0

Between the Palin pick, his lobbyist ties and now this..I mean this is the worst, most ridiculous presidential campaign in my lifetime. I mean this is just stupefyingly inane and...and...I have run out of vocabulary to address this...it's...it's..

    • Couldn't agree more! McCain's campaign is a total clusterfuck!!!DCDesigns

    Obama:

"However a senior Obama campaign official said Obama "intends to debate."..."The debate is on," a senior Obama campaign official told ABC News.

Obama supporter and chief debate negotiator Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., told MSNBC that "we can handle both," when asked about his reaction to McCain's call to postpone the first debate because of the administration's bailout plan."

    Just Jedi Mind Fucked McCain....

  • GeorgesII0

If Obama flip flops on this, you guys will get McCain for 4 years,
I'll pound the shit out of McCain if I was him.

  • monkeyshine0

This is clearly McCain trying to show how "presidential" he is...and he's talking down to Obama...as though he's a junior. Unbelievable.

  • tommyo0

It's a decent political move for a candidate with sinking numbers though. He gets a few days to figure out which direction he's going to go on the bailout. Obama already said he's against it so McCain will have to do the same. McCain will be biting a lot of hands going against the bailout ...

Also he puts Obama in a tough position, depending on media spin, if he decides to go forward with his campaign. Could be viewed as Obama caring more about the campaign than the crisis.

    100% political. 100% bs.

  • sikma0

what a joke. someone should remind him that he's not the president - just a candidate

  • TheBlueOne0

Obama should agree and then say "When he's ready we can even debate in any of McCain's 13 houses. Whatever makes him comfortable..."

  • mg330

Is anyone getting emails like this from anyone?

    --------------------------------...
I'm against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG.

Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a We Deserve It Dividend.

To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S.Citizens 18+.

Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child.

So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up..

So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that
    equals $425,000.00.

My plan is to give $425,0 00 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend.

Of course, it would NOT be tax free. So let's assume a tax rate of
    30%.

Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends

$25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.

But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket. A

    husband and wife has $595,000.00.

What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?

Pay off your mortgage - housing crisis solved.

Repay college loans - what a great boost to new grads

Put away money for college - it'll be there

Save in a bank - create money to loan to entrepreneurs.

Buy a new car - create jobs

Invest in the market - capital drives growth

    Pay for your parent's
medical insurance - health care improves

Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean - or else

Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks

who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and
every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.

If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( "vote buy" ) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President.

If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U S Citizen
    18+!

As for AIG - liquidate it. Sell off its parts.

Let American General go back to being American General. Sell off the real estate.

Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.

Here's my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn't.

Sure it's a crazy idea that can "never work."

But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party.

How do you spell Economic Boom?

I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion We Deserve It Dividend more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC.

And remember, The Family plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.

Ahhh...I feel so much better getting that off my chest.

Were campaigns suspended during the Civil War? During the Great Depression? During World War 2?

    No.

Sure this Wall Street clusterfuck is a big deal, but it ain't any of those.

This is so funny coming from the guy who's campaign said American's were "whiners"? I only see two people whining here...Paulson not being able to get his bailout and McCain cause the campaign is giving him a headache.

    • lol, TOO TRUEmg33

He just needs the weekend to get his pants cleaned. He's clearly fudging his Depends over this debate.

  • TheBlueOne0

May 2006: ""One of the things I would do if I were President would be to sit the Shiites and the Sunnis down and say, 'Stop the bullshit,'" said Mr. McCain, according to Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi, an invitee, and two other guests."

So is this how this is going to work? Is McCain gonna gear up and walk into Congress tomorrow, take one cold steely eyed war hero look at Paulson on one side and then look at the Congress people and say "Stop the Bullshit!" Is that how this is going to go down? Just asking...

    • Yes, then Cindy will hand out free Budweiser and the world will be right.rylamar
