Kwesi, i feel your argument was formed in the marketing departments of said corporations because on the $600 machine my bro plays any graphic intensive game at highest settings that Alienware probably charges 3k for machines that are able to handles such intensity. In other words yo pay for the brand, BUT NOT for "realiability, optimized performance" because that comes with any machine.

i like how a thread about ultimately inconsequential issue (other then the fact that mac users are getting fucked in the ass by apple) gets so many responses.

In the US, buy your mac from apple refurb store or a third party vendor (ie. amazon) to get a discount and avoid sales tax.
Outside US, buy from the US..

there is more...
the core2 quad is a "xeon". a quick search showed 1 cpu (2.8GHz) goes for 849 dollars.
- the standard graphic card (which is in the mac) goes from $224 to $337.akrokdesign

At the end of the day, it's about quality vs. quantity. Same goes for any genuine luxury brand.
Have a look at this - not even Alienware give this kind of attention to their product lines:

it never ceases to amaze me how many people dont understand branding - difference between a hyundai and mercedes? yeah they both get you from point a to b, but the public in general wants to drive a mercedes because of the feeling it gives you around the brand.

To use Microsoft WIndows is to have purulent chancres on your entire body -- to pay money for them, feed them with living worms and reinstall and upgrade them two times a year.
If someone doesnt know, viruses, worms and spyware, which gather different kinds information about the owner is a practically legal and extremely profitable business. A friend of mine has told me that all of his friends who survived the dot com bubble in the early 2000s in America are now writing spyware and viruses.
The crisis of overproduction -- half of the population writes worms, the other half writes worm removing software. Microsoft platform in a nutshell

For me it boils down to lifestyle. I've used a Mac for about 16 years now (since my high school word processing class) and it's just been a standard in my life. I've use PCs on and off for about 8 years, and my personal preference has swayed Mac. I don't really feel that they're that expensive, considering that the G3 (the thing had a 4GHard drive) and monitor I bought when I first got out of college cost me $2500 total, just a few months ago I bought a refurb iMac for $1500. I'm more than happy.

when you first open/start up your new pc, does it make you smile?
An apt metaphor for the appeal (and justified purchase of a mac) is in the wii — the incredibleness of shigeru miyamoto's "I think this will be a better experience because it is atmospheric and pleasant" or in the programming of the wii's update alert to be in the pattern of a bird call. Careful thought and ingenuity combined with technology. Plus new applications, interface elements, and smart behaviors that constantly bring a smile to my face.
Hence, why I will most probably plunk down the requisite 2K when I am prepared to buy a new laptop.

I've had 2 dell laptops, 1 I smashed, it was perfectly fine. the other the hd gave out so I replaced that. the killer was that one's videocard pretty much melted down and won't run 3d apps.

I don't know about modern top processors and video boards. Could someone actually price a top newegg/owc computer against a mac pro? With xeons and stuff. We know there's something wrong with the calculations..

If you think a PC is much better value, then just buy that... don't understand the argument. The Hyundai vs. Mercedes argument is about right... If you can't afford one, or justify the price of one of them, then get the other. No one is forcing you to buy a mac.
I just know in the long term it has saved me many many days in fecking about with Norton etc... but you might not have that propblem

I've been on macs my whole life. Couldn't figure out how to save an attachment on my parents pc the other day for the life of me. Conclusion: I'm sticking with the macs.

Back to the kitcar comparison - you could spec the Mercedes engine, suspension, seats, etc., but it would still not be a Mercedes.
I don't think you can compare a home built computer to a factor sealed and tested version, whether it be a Dell, HP or Apple. You pay a little more, but you get compatibility and out-of-the box performance (no testing).
I think it just comes down to how much you'll pay for a higher quality chassis and body. All the components are the same, performance is the same, etc.
A better analogy:
PC (Dell, HP, etc.) = Mercedes engine and tranny, with a GM body and chassis (new Camaro is pretty nice)
Apple = Mercedes, same performance as the PC, but a better made body and chassis
The Hyundai vs. Mercedes analogy is not correct or fair. I like Apple's more, but I don't like OS X (of course, I hate Vista far more!) and I need PCs to run 3D Studio.
So I stick with the Mercedes performance in a mediocre case.

do you have to defrag macs?
- nope. but some do anyways: http://digg.com/appl…emmaopeel

judging platform's performance from your gf's PC...? Are you mad? My ex had 3 mac and they all worked like shit -- not because of the machine but because she managed to fuck up the computers in the process.

I bought a copy of Mac Life. It went through 18 problems with macs. All 18 blamed the users. What a load of bullshit. Your computer starts acting buggy and it's always your fault.
