+1 for Textpattern. I'm warming to Wordpress now due to it's more active development and rapidly improving admin interface, but would recommend Textpattern for it's ease of learning. Once you've got your head around the structure, it's very easy to build.

jumping this ship with a question:
Has anyone been able to just use the image uploader from WP?

T e x t p a t t e r n (for the 10000th time)
It's not blog-centric, avoid the 'loop' or any of that PHP stuff and has a very helpful community, OK the admin leaves a lot to be desired looks-wise but you can change that easily. Even got its own book!

I'll have to give WP another shot I suppose. I first tried it a few years back and hated the way it was laid out and how it interfered with my preferred way of doing front end design.
I have mostly used EE, textpattern or sNews depending on the size/scope etc. I personally love sNews as a front end designer as it doesn't get in the way, but it is more geared to bloggy styyle sites and is too light for anything beyond a small business level, but it's getting better and has a small but hardcore user community. I hear the new Textpattern update is pretty rad...

It really depends on what the objective of your site is. What are you trying to accomplish with the site? For lots of sites I think it is easier to learn php mysql and program exactly what you need than learn third party software ... but then again it really depends on what you want to do

Our developer says EE but its not that flexible in terms of extending it. But holds hope that it improves in the next release. No to Joomla though. Works like a pile of vomit.
