Impact is a good typeface, and I am talking about it from a designers perspective.

When you shoot shit, you read your script 2-3 times then do some pre-pro. Maybe build sets, visit some locations to come up with lighting schemes etc. Since i often work with crappy directors (not always, but it just happens that quite often it's the case) on the day of the shoot they show you the scene and based on that you give them the best 5-6 angles to "cover" the scene of, say, 2 people talking in a room. This is TV filmmaking. In TV, the scene is not about something beyond and under the surface, the TV is shallow and the scene is about nothing else but what comes out of people's mouths, thus for the purpose of the edit you need to get enough footage to cover that shit. Films with soul on the other hand (or directors who grew beyond the TV coverage) don't need the coverage because the director knows that he only needs this shot and that one to fully be happy with the scene...
Watch the Button again and you will see the most orthodox camera angles and editing as if the director didn't believe in his skills (which he's proven that he has) or the material thus he shot lots of unnecessary coverage "for safety."
- I get what you are saying ... but I feel like you are being waaaaaaaay to pickyRamanisky2
- or maybe this film wasn't about pushing the visual envelope so much as it was about telling a story7point34
- or maybe fincher has a bit more of an ability to explain why he did what he did than your assumptions7point34

I'm being picky because it was the only story of the ones that were nominated that i truly wanted to see because it sounded cool and as you know when you expect a lot then you also feel "cheated" when the film doesn't deliver... And on top of that i wanted to see why the film sucked despite of good promise (i do that with almsot every production i'm involved with too)

I hope anyone saying "they all suck" (not you specifically, sputnik) has actually watched the films.

"I get what you are saying ... but I feel like you are being waaaaaaaay to picky"
I think its the perogative of someone who works in the field to be picky. Its about standards. It doesn't mean it should impinge on a layman's opinions, but really, a professional who is not picky might as well quit.
- That said though, I haven't even read the thread much less watched any of the films you are probably discussing.Horp

are there any movies you liked in the last 20 years?

sounds like another disgruntled bitter filmmaker to me.
maybe a sub-par year for a-list films, though none on that list "sucked"
also, you can read up on why Fincher did what he did - he wasn't any less passionate.

quamb, don't be naive, no one starts a project thinking i'm not feeling it, or i'm not inspired, or i'm not understanding the material. You always come in with 110% of energy but at some point you have to step back and face the reality and be "oh, fuck me, i screwed up." That shit doesn't happen way into production, or even post-production. ...Or ever as is the case with the recent Star Wars films.
- I'm not being naive... And yes, I've been in the same situation before. Though just don't see it with Button.quamb

for someone that didn't care about his shoot, it's odd that i wasn't allowed to crop, adjust, colour, or in any way tamper with any of the unit photography. my impression was that fincher invested a lot of himself in that film and the end result, visually at least, was exactly what he was looking to acheive.
but again, i'm not a film maker, so probably don't understand.

I've been seeing movies on cable that I thought were made in 08 but turned out to be 07. I'm that out of touch.

the dark night was crap

slumdog was good. i thought.

Dark Knight could be in best film.
Its a arrogant smugness of high brow film lover that looks down on the action film genre. But in a lot of ways Dark Knight is much stronger than all those 'introvert character studies'.

I thought Benjamin Butts was good.

Milk wasn't mind blowing, but the best offering this year by far. I can not believe Button got nominated for so much... that film is a "meh" film through and through. How can Pitt get the nod when his fucking New Orleans accent wavers in and out the whole time?
I'm glad all of Doubt's main actors got nods, it was the best acted film of the year. Also, Synedoche NY needed to get a nod for writing, wtf?

Maybe we should focus on this instead:

"Milk" was the only one on the list I saw, and I found it decently entertaining.
But then again, I also shed a tear watching "Maid In New York", so I'm probably not the most qualified to share my opinion in this thread.

(I've never handed out dutch milkshakes to skanky script supervisors or craft services chicks either, so I may have been disqualified right from the start).

I thought Rock-n-Rolla was incredibly entertaining but sadly no Oscar nods.. :(

How about best line... can we give that award away?
'cause in Button, there's a part at the beginning when the blind dude says "I hope you enjoy my cock".I nearly pissed myself. The movie was pretty much ruined for me after that.
