Sad year for film

I'm being picky because it was the only story of the ones that were nominated that i truly wanted to see because it sounded cool and as you know when you expect a lot then you also feel "cheated" when the film doesn't deliver... And on top of that i wanted to see why the film sucked despite of good promise (i do that with almsot every production i'm involved with too)

When you shoot shit, you read your script 2-3 times then do some pre-pro. Maybe build sets, visit some locations to come up with lighting schemes etc. Since i often work with crappy directors (not always, but it just happens that quite often it's the case) on the day of the shoot they show you the scene and based on that you give them the best 5-6 angles to "cover" the scene of, say, 2 people talking in a room. This is TV filmmaking. In TV, the scene is not about something beyond and under the surface, the TV is shallow and the scene is about nothing else but what comes out of people's mouths, thus for the purpose of the edit you need to get enough footage to cover that shit. Films with soul on the other hand (or directors who grew beyond the TV coverage) don't need the coverage because the director knows that he only needs this shot and that one to fully be happy with the scene...
Watch the Button again and you will see the most orthodox camera angles and editing as if the director didn't believe in his skills (which he's proven that he has) or the material thus he shot lots of unnecessary coverage "for safety."
- I get what you are saying ... but I feel like you are being waaaaaaaay to pickyRamanisky2
- or maybe this film wasn't about pushing the visual envelope so much as it was about telling a story7point34
- or maybe fincher has a bit more of an ability to explain why he did what he did than your assumptions7point34

Impact is a good typeface, and I am talking about it from a designers perspective.

if only fincher didn't care. i might have gotten some of my 400 or so comps for online reach pieces past him. believe me, he had control over absolutely every minute detail relating to with that film.
but i guess, you're talking about it from a film makers persepctive.

Ramanisky2, almost every production i shoot (and i shoot looooots of low budget shit) has the same camera coverage as the Button. I can tell you that the director wasn't inspired making this film at all. He's got some cred as he did "Fight Club" and "Seven" but with the project it was run of the mill shit for him and he just didn't care. There is nothing inspirational in it at all (i'm talking from filmmakers perspective, so yours might be a bit different).
- I'm pretty sure he spent countless sleepless nights putting this movie togetherRamanisky2
- I didn't see any flaws with the look of the movie .. as far as the story .. you either liked it or you didn'tRamanisky2
- you are bit of an arrogant mediocre twat eh?tank02

like Ramansky, don'tmean to sound like a dick, but...
I realize you fancy yourself quite the DP and fuck chicks from kraft services in the ass and all that, but let's be honest. If Fincher, Boyle, Howard, or Van Sant called you to work on any of the flicks you're trashing, you'd be on your knees mouth open waitin for the saucy contract, and hypin the flick at oscar time.

I haven't seen any of them, and I'll probably only like about two of them, but I'm tempted to disagree with you anyway
- Ramanisky20
hey pr2 ... I dont mean to sound like a dick ... but I'd like to see you put a movie like Benjamin Buttons together ...
its all about a well told story and I have seen 3 of the above mentioned films and the stories to all 3 I thought were really good
- u really think that Button was a "well told story"?pr2
- ummm YEAH!!!!Ramanisky2
- It was not a good story.kgvs72

With some of the titles i don't even have a desire to watch any of it.
Before you even watch "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood" there is already some poetry with the title. ..."Rachel Getting Married" or "The Dark Knight"... i mean wtf?
- daveglanz0
"Slumdog", "Milk" and "Frost/Nixon" - all very good. Shame on them for leaving out "The Dark Knight", "The Visitor", "The Wrestler", or"Rachel Getting Married."
- pr2-3
Well, even last year we had "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood" both films that were more then just run-of-the-mill directing exercises as the films of thsi year.

Oh come on:
* “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (Paramount and Warner Bros.)
* “Frost/Nixon” (Universal)
* “Milk” (Focus Features)
* “The Reader” (The Weinstein Company)
* “Slumdog Millionaire” (Fox Searchlight)Which one of those was any good? I don't know maybe i'm stuck in the film world so it simple shit doesn't really impresses me but even if i wasn't those are all subpar, very, very average productions.
