I am researching logical simple navigation ideas for presenting beautiful work.
Most photographers sites are built in flash and end up being a bit clunky and slow. Although this is quite lovely: http://www.luigibussolati.com/
Does anyone know any good ones built with HTML & Javascript?

i always found that site quite irritating to use, having to jump from the left menu up to the numbers at the top... easy to lose your place. nice work though.

are you looking for something more minimal ?

I think that photos on a black background seem to work much better...quite like this: http://www.canto-photographer.co…

This works well, but runs slow for me on a mac... I bet this runs rapid on a PC... does anyone find the nav confusing?

I recently made my brother's website, I'm not a web guy so all my web skills are very low. anyway the end result is very simple and I like it. :)

is it just me - or are all photog's websites extremely c%nty?
They are all fullscreen, intro screen, millions of lame flash animations, etc.
so many extra bits and bobs and not really a focus on the photography.
Who are they expecting to look at their sites? and why would they think they want all that crud? wouldnt it be potential clients? and wouldnt they want to jsut see your photos and not have to figure out how your "cool" flash navigation works?
please, someone explain.

oh look, it's another ajax developer making sweeping generalisations about flash. we don't see enough of that here if you ask me.
have you even looked at the some of the links in this thread?

I think it's just you.

@skt - it isnt an indictment on flash. Flash is fine. When i look at many of these sites and others, i just see a lot of attention paid to having intros and unusual navigation and animations that add nothing.
I am thinking that you would want your site to be geared toward a creative director as a user. That person wants to bookmark a photo and send a link to a co-worker, or just get in and see the work.
I am not sure they care to be impressed by all the creative website work.
Would anyone think a photographer is more talented based on their flash website? I always just found it odd that you would make it harder to focus on your actual work, that's all.
- skt0
haha, to be fair, i hadn't looked at half of them myself. and yeah, having gone back, people have been posting flash sites with intros... i agree, pointless.
still can't fault this.

@skt - this is definitely more on track. although horizontal nav is not conventional. But, i would say the idea of having a plain-ass website, where the only thing to look at is the work is exactly right.

'although horizontal nav is not conventional'
why does in need to be conventional?
