I've done two photographers websites – they are quite different but there were some challenges common to both.
http://matthewthompsonphotograph…
http://richgilligan.com/Both Matty and Rich wanted their work shown with due respect – they were both against the use of thumbnails as a means of navigation and wanted the photos shown with as little distraction as possible. In both cases it was stipulated that there should be no menus or buttons on top of the shots. Both were keen to separate themselves from the droves of amateurs out there – I think that this is the reason many photographers end up with full-screen browser-hijacking sites with overly flashy treatments etc.
In both cases it was a case of customising and tweaking an existing CMS to their needs, namely Indexhibit and SSP Director. Both are highly recommended! Once I got deeplinking working in SSP I felt a lot less guilt about working in a full-flash site.
I hope that this is of some use. I'm working on V3 of Matt's site at the moment so this thread has made very interesting reading. By the way both Matt and Rich are extremely nice guys and extraordinary photographers – I highly recommend them both!
- i was just about to post matt thompson, its one of the best photographer site ive seen in a while.jimzyk
- nice job by the way!jimzyk
- that rich gilligan site is very nice too.jimzyk
- I couldn't agree more, full screen is ok if you click a button to make it happen... Its when the client starts asking for things that you feel is wrong it gets frustrating. Lose the intros, fuss and simple apple'esque controls...ejectstudio

I had been tooling around with updating my website. Not sure how I really feel about it. I felt most photo sites seemed to be the same and I was hoping to try something a little different. Have a look...

There was a good one posted about 2 months ago of a photographer from New Zealand. I'm mentioning it for 2 reasons; It had good navigation, and it also had photos of extremely hot women. If anyone can think of this wond'rous website's name, please feel free to share :)

This is a great one, and its mostly generating the flash from an external xml file. Which would make it super easy to update AND load at the clients request.

http://www.nickknight.com Just goes to show, even the finest photographers haven't got the most incredible website... Not enough to view here at once. Should at least have the option to view as thumbs!
- if you are nick night, you really don't need a site...tkmeister
