Anyone else ever been gouged by (mt) for overages caused by hacking? Just got a bill for over $5,000 because a hacker found a way to send email from an old PHP page. Was able to delete the file after a few hours but was charged anyway.

I'm thinking it's time to move on, only option might be to walk away.

that's absurd!

don't pay! fuck them! cunts!
it happened to me once (not with mt) and the guys reacted very quickly, and just froze my part of the server. and then APOLOGIZED for the inconvenience. that's what mt should do. cunts.

never had a fee, but they shut my sever down a few months ago when the same thing happened (hacker was piggybacking a php file on an OLD client site i had parked on my server, using it to spam). i didn't get any warning and they were quite jerkalicious when i called them, pointing the finger at me as the spammer. it was resolved, but not fun having to talk them into turning my server back on...

something like that happened to me on a much smaller scale about 3 years ago.
I did not receive any charges, but they did suspend my account until the matter was resolved. My server space wasn't hacked, but someone was using an insecure php script to generate spam emails.

Funny, I'm currently looking at switching from the old shared server to the grid system. Your thread just raised alarm bells.

which system are you on??

don't pay! and if they don't help you, fuck them, there are lots of hosting companies out there...

funny, i've never heard a good thing about this company, except for the infrequent "i never had any trouble with 'em" comments that trickle in every now and then..
the only seeming testament to their legitimacy seems to be their branded presence on this very site.

MT can be good or sometimes confusingly bad. They had a big issue with mySQL being slow for Grid Servers a couple of years ago. They have a systemic issue with upgrading accounts, if you had DV3.0 and wanted to move to DV3.5, with new versions of software, you had to do a bit more wrestling than is logical. Also their documentation can be odd, with some pages only applying to some types of accounts but you don't find out till after you've tried all the stuff in the page and it doesn't work.
They've never been mean to me though.....
The issue of rogue scripts is odd, if it cost MT tons of $$$, then they have a legit beef with you... otherwise who knows...

when you leave mail wide open, they get somewhat peeved, and for good reason. when you're on a shared server, your IP address is shared with many domains. when you pull a bonehead move and spam the shit out of people, you get that IP blacklisted, and everyone else on your shared server gets their email black-holed. which incidentally happened just last week to myself and a whole bunch of other people on grid. maybe it was you... gee, thanks.
if you need hosting with training wheels, use godaddy.

I have never had a problem with them. I have been using them for over 6 years now.

You're already paying too much if you're using MT! $5K is icing on one hell of a cake...

Strange. MT stepped in and closed down an old PHP mailer script that was open to abuse on my server a couple of years back. They dropped me an email to let me know what the problem had been, what they'd done and how I could rectify it, had I lost an important capability.
- they've schemed better ways of making money since then apparently. the old create a virus to sell the anti scam?SteveJobs
